4/22/87 Dear Ad Hocers, Some concern has been raised about the data base which supports the hypothesis of a "background level" of 5-15 ppt in human lipid tissue in industrialzed countries. While I have not conduct a scrupulous scouring of the literature, you will find attached a collection of abstracts and/or papers which have been a part of the Neverending International Symposium on Chlorinated Dioxins and a Multitude of Close Friends. I have toted up the number of analyses of adipose, milk, and blood samples represented by these studies. My Nissan Instuments abacus tells me that some 757 individuals have contributed to this information. The largest block of these is a collection of 225 blood samples and another collection of 92 milk samples, both from Germany. In addition to this set of data, there are two more studies which have used a significant amount of compositing: in one study 46 samples of adipose tissue were analyzed which were composites from 900 folks; in the other study some number of samples of human milk (may be only 1) were analzyed which were composites of 200 folks. Therefore, at least 757 samples from 757 separate individuals have been analyzed. If composite samples are included in the total, at least 804 samples from 1857 individual samples have been analyzed.
