Mineral Fiber Thermal Insulation for Elevated Temperatures &t Low Temperatures - It waa stated that NIMA opposed the specifications in their present form, inas* much as they were unwieldly and would cause confusion to the user. It was stated that NIMA did not oppose the use of ASTM Specific*- tions, but endorsed their use. It was pointed cut that the specifica* tions needed revision before they were promulgated since several of the referenced ASTM Specifications were either being revised, combined or dropped. Further, the procuring agencies lose control of the specifications and thus the products secured by not stating the physical requirements within the specifications proper, NIMA will write a letter to this effect to Mr* W, S. McLeod of GSA, (b) HH-I-00523b * Insulation Block and Pipe Covering Thermal (Calcium Silicate for Temperatures up to 1200F) The following comments were offered by NIMA to GSA on this specification: Par 1,2 - Add a Class D - Dual Temperature Jacket - Change Class E to Class F, Par 2*2 - Delete ASTM C 166, Add ASTM C 302, C 203, C 335, C 356 and C 446, Par 3, 3* 1 - Delete 3" wide block, Table I - (a) Change 'V* values to 0,42, 0,47 and 0,52, at 200F, 300F and 400F mean temperature, respectively, lb) Change compressive strength (dry) to 60 lbs/sq in* (c) Change compressive strength (wet) to 25 lbs/sq in* -(d) Change soaking heat test to 6 hours duration* Table II - Change to decimals* Par 3* 4,3* 4 - Change thickness of foil to nominal 1 mil thick and the water vapor transmission to 0* 02 perms* Add Par 3, 4* 3,5 Dual Temperature Jacket (For Below Ambient Applications) The jacket shall be a 3 ply laminant of kraft paper, foil and kraft paper* The water vapor transmission of the jacket material shall not exceed 0*02 perms when test ed according to 4.3.2.1. Par* 4, 3* 2,1 * Add **Proccdure A11, Other suggestions were: 1* Add a minimum weight of canvas to Par 3* 4, 3* 2* 3 2. Par 3, 4. 3, 3 - Delete "for example", and add other alloys, 3, Par 3. 4* 3, 4, 3 - Add a smoke developed rating of 50* It was pointed out that GSA was in the process of preparing a specification pertaining to low temperature jackets. Date of promulgation is unknown at this time. SPECIFICATION FOR BUREAU OF YARDS k DOCKS AS PREPARED BY POPE-EVANS-ROBBINS This specification had not been reviewed by NIMA inasmuch as copies were not received prior to the meeting. Suggested changes were dis cussed. The specification will be redrafted and recirculated for com ments by Pope-Evans-Robbins. NIMA is to receive 25 copies for dis tribution to its members, GSA SPECIFICATION - THERMAL INSULATION - MECHANICAL This specification had previously been reviewed by NIMA and comments given to GSA, Several editorial changes were suggested at this meeting by those present.
