July 29, 1971 P le a s e reer to your m em o of July 26, 1971, The talc used in JOHNSON'S Baby Pow der is obtained from a selected m ine in Verm ont w here the ore consists m ainly of platy talc w ith only trace amounts of fibrous m inerals (trem olite/aetinolite). It is fre e of c h ry so tile fib e rs w hich m ay be called "pure asb esto s" by the layman. The ore undergoes a careful purifying process which includes a 36-step washing process to m axim ize its content of high lubricity platy talc and to rem ove or substantially reduce any traces of fib ro u s m in e ra ls w hich m ay be p re s e n t in th e unrefined o re. The resulting tele has been shown by three independent consulting labora to rie s* to contain negligible trac es of fibrous m in erals and no chrysotile fibers.
