In 18.47 an Italian chemist, named Suhrcro, discovered the chemical combination that we know today as nitroglyeerin. Alrhch igh hc pointed out the possibilities of his discovery' as an explosive, the substance was actually used in his clay only in aleo holic solution for medicine (it is of great value as a he<j.rt stimulant, in the almost incredible proportion of r pair to i j i 51,000).
hi the middle decades of the past century, California was a veritable laboratory of explosives, because of the great requirements of gold min ing. And that reminds me of the strange accident that happened a couple of generations ago hi the Wei Is-Fa rgo Building, a curious four or five story stone structure that still stands in the heart 0/ San Francisco's business district. One day chore arrived in that building an express package which seemed to be leaking. With rhe idea of opening it and remedying this situation, an employe gave a vigorous rap with a hammer on the mysterious container. The result was a terrific blast that virtually gutted tlie building and wrought appalling havoc. That was the Pacific Boast's introduction to nitroglycerin, a suhstariLe which has since been invaluable to mining, J umbering, farming, and mu n v other great industries in the Ear West.

It was In 1 $67 that Alfred Nohd, the Swedish inventor, discovered a practical process of making nitro glycerin on a large commercial scale, and five year's later he invented dyna mite -by absorbing the nitroglycerin man earth like porous material similar to "fuller's earth." He thereby revo lutionized the art of mining and its thousands of industrial ramifications. It: is a rather curious paradox that the famous Nobel prizes -for contribu tions to world peace, for achievements in the realm of imaginative 1 henming and so on had their origin hi money t h a r w a s m .1 d e fro m d yn:imitc. was given to every detail of sanitation and health. ;t rapacity almost equal rest* he original thirty-hole blasting machine of the Centennial, hut very much smaller, lighter and more convenient to use, These were designed with a smaller type of generator than that used in the larger machines, namely a dynamo type, which had electromagnets in stead of permanent magnets. The rotation of the handle spins the armature by means of a train of gears, and the revolving armature picks up current from the residual magnetism in the field magnets and builds it up. This, in turn, iniluences the magnets so strongly that at rhe* end of the stroke a current of high enough voltage is generated to lire ten or sometimes twenty caps.
The foregoing briefly sc is fonh the history and to some exrenr rhe basic principles employed in the de velopment of these electric firing devices. At any rate it will serve as a background for a more detailed stiulv of the `'baby" blasting machines comprising a part of the writer's accumulated collection through the years,,

It is still possible to get accidental contact with these live terminals, a Ithough not likely in the ordinary course of mine blasting.
No. i is a dry-cell batterv with spring contact points anti a clip to hold it on the miner's belt. This butterv is operated hv holding the leading wires in contact with the posts and pushing them down simultaneously.
Mo, 3 is a permissible dry-cel! buttery with a special contact point which males accidental firing prac tically impossible, but it lias the disad vantage of the comparatively short life of the dry cells, so that one never knows when it h going to dic.
Mo. 19, shown at the bottom of this page, is n permissible shot firing dt vice, designed to he carried on the miner's belt. It consists of a storage battery, similar to those furnishing
currenr for miners' electric cap lamps, mid is equipped with a special lid vvirh two spring com act points. Press
ing these down with two specially-
constructed plugs causes a current to
flow through the lines connected to
them. When properly assembled, this
is a fairly sale and dkeient device,
hut every now and then miners become
impatient at having to use special
plugs on tile ends of their leading
wire, or they Jose one or both plugs.
Then they are likelv to knock rhe
top off this battery, leaving exposed
terminals which may easily cause
accidents. In fact, we have record of
one instance where a miner uncoiling
an electric blasting cap accidentally
brought the cuds of the cap wires in
contact with the two terminals of
the battery, peppering an unfortunate
bystander with copper from the
exploding cap.

tional type of permanent magnets and

Ni>. 6 is an ingenious machine in

holes in the muzzle into which the
leading wires are inserted. Pressing
rhe trigger releases a spring, which
must be wound up previously by
inserting a key in the back of the
machine, which spins the armature.
Unfortunately, some nervous miners
object to seeing one of these pistols
pulled out suddenly and are apt to
become irritated and excited. Spring-
actuated machines up to the present
rime have never been particularly
successful In smaii-sizc blasting
machines.

I'o prevent the loss oi this canal a second time, it was necessary to utilize some quick method Co obfain the required outlet, and the decision was made to use dynamite for this important work.
HIrSling operations were loininrrnccd at the lagoon, and the excaca tion proceeded to the canal already constructed. All labor and supplies, including dynamite, were brought ro the site hv native canoes tor a distance of* approximated}' five miles through a series oi winding channels. A vamp was established on the edge of the lagoon and the dynamite was stored on a large barge.
