Maxwell October 6, 1986 HS&EA Industrial Hygiene Asbestos Exposure Monitoring - So. Chas. - 309 Attached are the results of the Asbestos exposure monitoring performed on R. 6. Salisbury and D. M. Bourn on September 9, 1986 at the South Charleston plant's Building 309. The employees were monitored while stripping and bagging approximately 12-15 feet of Asbestos from a 1 inch line. The employees were equipped with cloth coveralls and Tyvek disposable coveralls, boots, gloves, and a half-face respirator equipped with Willson R-12 HEPA filter cartridges. The Tyvek coveralls were removed and discarded before leaving the barricaded area and the employees showered upon completion of the job. They had no Asbestos exposure before or after this monitoring job on this day. The monitoring results indicate that the levels were below the 0.2 fiber/cc Permissible Exposure Level (PEL), established by OSHA for an 8-hour workday (TWAg). However, the levels were so close to the action level, 0.1 fiber/cc, that statistically the action level may or may not have been exceeded. Therefore, we must assume that the action level has been exceeded and take appropriate action to lower the exposure levels. We recommend that more water be used (when possible) and extra care taken in bagging and cleaning the Asbestos. UCC 024582 Asbestos Monitoring - continued -2- October 6, 1986 Please notify R. G.
