GI-1-87 1987 SUBJECT: Removal Of Asbestos Tile In Lab A preliminary meeting was held to discuss requirements for the removal of asbestos tile from the Laboratory floor. The following members were in attendance: J. B. Towers - Maint. S. Starks - ABI T. N. Moody - Lab E. M. Koudelka - Lab H. A. Melat - Maint. R. W. King - Lab G. Ille - Lab Because the new floor tile must be laid on clean concrete for adequate adhesion, both the linoleum and asbestos vinyl tile must be removed. A trial removal will be scheduled in the Lab Stockroom to evaluate how easily the tile can be removed. The following action plan will be followed: 1. Work will be scheduled for evening shift. 2. Asbestos background sample will be obtained prior to job. 3. Personal and area monitoring will be done during tile removal. 4. Tile removal will be done under wet conditions. 5. A Hepa vacuum cleaner, approved for asbestos dust may be used during trial. 6. ABI employees doing the tile removal will wear paper coveralls and high efficiency dust'respirators. 7. The area will be cordoned off with appropriate signs to prevent walk-through during tile removal. 8. Wet scraping to remove tile backing from floor will be evaluated. A trial area in the Lab Stockroom will have tile removed and new tile added. Based on these results, a determination will be made as to the appro priate method to be used in the remaining lab areas.
