Parent Pace National Corporation 500 Seventh Ave., South Kirkland, WA 98033 Dear Bob: With reference to our telephone conversation 7/12/79, I hope that I answered your questions concerning the possibility of detectable amounts of fibrous tremolite being found in expanded vermiculite and the background data leading up to Grace's policy for labeling expanded ver miculite to lightweight fertilizer accounts. It would be advisable for Pace National to review section 1901.1001 of the 0SHA standards on asbestos. Enclosed is a 3M disposible respirator and data sheet which is recommended for.materials such as vermiculite. Also enclosed is an article on the use of dust suppressants in a fertilizer manufacturing operation. In one particular fertilizer plant that I have visited, a water spray was put on all bulk fertilizer raw materials (including vermiculite) unloaded from hopper cars to open bins. This water spray was very effective as a dust suppressant and virtually eliminated all visible fugitive dust.
