Annual Meeting A highly successful annual acatlng was held at the Drake Hotel, Chicago, on April 22 and 23. Copies of most of the papers presented vera Bade available to Mahers, and several vers reprinted la part or In full in publications serving tha trade. 2. A.B.M.S.^Year Rook The introductory page of the section on lead to appear In tha Year hook of tha American bureau of Metal Statistics was prepared. 3. Information bulletins Two such bulletins were circulated to Maher* during tha quarter. HEALTH AMD SAPCTY A. State Legislation The legislative sessions of virtually all tha atates having terminated during the quarter. It Is gratifying that tha several regulatory proposals causing us concern are now In reasonably satisfactory status. For the nost part, on subjects of warning labeling, these have been bill* Introduced In California, Illinois, Indiana, Montana, Hew Jersey and Washington. The cooperation of the Manufacturing Chemists' Association and the National Paint, Varnish and Lacquer Association, both far acre adequately staffed for this sort of "watch dog" work than ar* we, hat been helpful. 5. Childhood Lead Poisoning Apart from dealing with the day-to-day prob lems which seemingly have no end, nejor Importance In the field of child'* hood plunblsa hat attached to our participation In tha activities of th*'( coemlttee advisory to the Philadelphia Hoalth Department on this subject, and to the criteria for diagnosis developed at our instigation. Meetings Meetings attended during the quarter just ended have In cluded the annual gatherings of our own Association and of the Industrial Health Conference, of the Massachusetts Medical Society and of the Aaerlcan Medical Association; also a conference on "Hetal Binding In Medicine" and the Creater Mew Tork Safety Conference and a meeting of the Metropolitan Hew Tork Section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association. Before a Joint session of that body and the Aaerlcan Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, a paper was delivered as part of the program of the Industrial Health Conference. 10. Bulletins Two Health and Safety Bulletins were sullied to our members during the quarter. IKWSTCT DEVELOPMENT--GCTE8AL 11. 'Lead" The second 1959 Issue of "hie quarterly was prepared, printed and distributed to nearly 55,000 people. On a new exchange arrangement, about 2,000 copies of each Issue are being distributed by the Lead Develop ment Association In Crest Britain, and L.I.A. will distribute, moitly to member personnel, about 1,000 copies of each Issue of "Lead Hews", pub lished twice a year by L.D.A. 12. Design Engineering Show L.I.A.'s display at this show In Philadelphia In May particularly emphasised new developments of Interest to design engineers. Including sound attenuation, pasrlaacent pigments, ceramic finishes, radiation shielding, thermoelectric#. The show was well attended. 13. Advertising The new campaign directed et design engtneeri la "Materials la Design Engineering" end 'Troduet Engineering" made Its first appearance with two pegs ads In each publication during the quarter. Red Lead Technical Letter Ho. 14 This letter, dealing with a new ship-bottom paint tested in cooperation with the Navy, was prepared and approved by tho Comities. The purpose of the luncheon wei to establish closer relationship between our own research and promotional staff end Ceramic Technical Committee, and the professor* who art supervising research under our fellowship grants at seven uni versities, who wire our guests. The meeting wee highly fruitful end all but one of tho professors Involved were present.
