Schulte File - Items 134 and 616, Aroclor Over the years Maintenance Engineers and Production Supervisors have put a lot of time and effort into selecting the best packing for the Aroclor still pumps. In 1966 Jimmy Carpenter and Vince Haupt were able to significantly improve the performance of the No. 4 still pump by going to a lead braided packing (Garlock No. 644, size 1/2", S.R. Code No. 15-56109). While making a study of our present practice concerning the use of packing throughout the plant, I find that we apparently have dis continued the use of this leaded packing in the Aroclor Department. I'd like to recommend to you that we install the packing on the No. 4 and No. 5 still pumps and that the operators keep a log on the performance and history of these pumps after installation of this leaded packing. It would also be wise to inform your chief operators that the maximum operating temperature of this packing is 500 deg.
