Glass Safety Task Force Committee A task force of 13 people (names attached) met with Mark Riddle and myself to address what type of revision was needed in our rule on shoes within the plant. Initial overall reaction was that the current rule, "Defective shoes or shoes with porous uppers such as sneakers, sandals, slippers, etc. , shall not be worn in shops, operating areas, or laboratories", was adequate but was not being enforced properly or consistently. / After considerable debate, it was decided that the following recommenda tion would be the consensus of the group and forwarded to the PMSB for evaluation and consideration. RECOMMENDATION: A. Employees working in or traveling through operating areas of the plant will wear shoes that meet the following minimum specifi cations: closed toe/back, and heels not to exceed 2" in height. Department supervision could set and maintain more strict requirements if, in the opinion of the department head, it was felt necessary to do so. B. Safety department would define and communicate which were the operating areas where this type of shoe would be worn. These rules would apply going to and from the area at the start and end of the workday. C. Adequate lead time for education and communication should be allowed to inform all employees of the plant. Employees, working in the Personnel Building, Reception Area, Administration Building, Office Annex and Application Building could continue to wear open toe/back high heels but would be required to change shoes when entering the defined operating areas of the plant. Although the group felt that a plant-wide rule on shoes that applied once you entered the gate would cut down the potential for hazards, they felt enforecement and consistency would be a problem. / amp attachment PatncK. ivi. rayae < Mark A.
