B. HIIMER MARKET DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT EMERYVILLE i -J>r // A visit was made to Emeryville for tiie purpose of watching them prepare a hatch of Adhesive VI in their equipment using Denver EPOS 834 stocks. This project was .designed to answer the question of whether a specification viscosity adhesive could possibly be made from the EPON 834 used at Denver. PREPARATION OF ADHESIVE VI A batch of EPOC Adhesive VI was made with EPON 834, lot 331, from Denver stock on September 13, 1954 so that it would be ready for testing by September 15- A second drum of EPON 334, let 3B1, shipped was found to have the gasket dried out and crumbled. Eefore this material could be used, it would be necessary to strain oat the rubber shreds. Therefore a demonstration run with Emeryville 2P0N 834, lot 43156, was made by their usual process as fellows: The drum of EPOB to be used was placed in a het-box at TO'^C for about 8 hours. Before dumping into the blender, it was allowed to stand about for a while sc thr.t the resin actually entering the blender was at 34C. Gross and tore weights were taken on the dram showing 492 lb charged. Steam was then turned on to the blender coils, slowly heating the charge. With the agitator running, 176-5 lb asbestos floats, grade 7TF2, were slowly sprinkled on the EPON and mixed in. Very little dry asbestos was ever visible. Asbestos addi tion took about an hour, after which 552C grams of u 33 3#' TiOg dispersion in E?OF 834 was added. This dispersion had been prepared in a colloid uype mill using coarcs carborundum stones as grinding surfaces. Blending was then continued for 2-1/2 hours, reversing the blades occasionally. At this time the blender contents has reached 70*C. An AYAF solution hid been prepared by heating 855 lb ally! glycidyl cher in a 300 gallon stainless steel autoclave ic 6oC, adding 456 lb Vinylite AYAF and mix ing for six hours at 60C. Then 714 grams cieetarn.no orange dye were added and mixing continued for another ho-xr. The solution eras then stored ii. drums for future use. Of thi6 solution, 135-5 lb were weighed cut in 5 gallon pails and poured into the running blender. Whan alt was in, a loose fitting cover was clumped on and agit aticu continued 30 minutes. The finished adhesive was th;u romped *oy tilting the bieciar after fastening a weir piste across the top. Burin--; the dumping operation an ex hauster was turned on to prevent allyl glyeidyl efchur vapor escupir-g into the rcerc. Packaging was into 5 gallon onen head nails to a gross '..-eight of 46 lo, net about 40 lb. , LAWl 029030 AES-018236 Page 2 Tills blender, while similar to the one at Denver, differs In several respects. It is somewhat smaller, no that or. 8l6 lb batch almost ccva-rs tiia blades. These blades run in the same direction and at the same speed of 50 Fili. Hie Denver blender operates at a 1632 lb charge which just covers the blades. The rear blade runs at half the speed of the front blade and in an opposite direction. Speeds are 25 and 50 RPM. The Denver blender is steam jacketed, permitting quicker heating and higher temperatures. Viscosity of the batch made on September 13 from 3PCIJ 63k, let 3E1, was 9^0 M C? thus showing that the resin used can make a low viscosity adhesive. TESTING PROCEDURE AND EfTOPMEIiT Faucis to be used in testing the adhesives are sheared from 0.6':-" sheets of 2;:G-T3 Alclad .d w.-i-.:r to a size that '.rill allow caving out 12 ctrips 1" vide. They are notched on each end l/2" from an edge to provide gage marls -..-ken cementing. The panels were then washed in trichloroethylene, dried, etched 20 minutes in a ..l60F bichromate solution, (10 parts NSgCrvC,...2ILp + 50 parte JC-b I-:0SC),_ + 3^0 parts dis tilled water) washed, dried and c-carfd'ir. a dust-free place. `'.Adhesive was weighed cut and 5. parts Curing Agent A added per hundrod pcivs atuecive, maxed, one r.ppliec. to the etched edge of the strips. It was observed that the time between miring and application was allowed to range from about 1/2 to ten minutes. The adhesive was then spread out to a film thickness of .006" by a doctor tlcde. Two such panels were then matched by the edge notches, backed by bakolite tars 12" x 1" x l/k" which '.rare protected by cellophane strips and held by si:: clamps. These are spring leaded "C:| clamps, 3" to 5" jaw depth, with an opening of about 3A*. Clomping pressure is estimated at 30 lb, but it will vary with the condition of the spring and the set of the jaws. The source of these steel body clamps was not In:own, but a similar die-cast clamp is available at Aircraft Tools, Inc., Las Frgel.es. California. The latter are not desirable as they take cn a permanent sat daring the curing cycle. Curing :raa stated to be at 2C0cF for k? minutes. (Union Laboratories Report SP-iO-JC cf Kay 10, 195k states that curing time should be 90 minutes S 2CGF.) Strips are cut to a 1" width, as measured by a steel rule, cn a small band caw. Edges are left rough. No objection was seen to our using steel backing bars, circular saw, cr screw "C" champs if they wore not turned to tight. During discussions with hr. C. E. Khute it was learned that while a little difficulty say be experienced at -70 and lc'0F in obtaining uniform temperatures ::hc:: too-dug adhesive cemented cc'gs, at |jCOcF fluctuation (temperature differences with tine) and variation (temperature difference with location) both became quite large. Sub-aero temperatures were not especially difficult to attain or control. A report (Emeryville ITo. P-3&3) describes the hot end cold boxes in use and their operating characteristics. In brief, constancy of 2C or less may be expected from -70 to 2C0F, with fluctuations of 5 and variations cf 13C at 51DF. Recovery time of two vo four minutes were observed at -70 or.d l60F. ho tests :.Tere made at this mime at 5CCF. It was recommended that all heated fixtures be especially ncmollized to prevent distortion at 6COF. For high temperature work it is imperative that rapid changes of samples be possible. Prolonged manipulation is quits difficult in a hot box. Grips similar to those detailed in the above report were advocated. LAM 029031 ABS-018237 .to M e i. :z:'::3 i:z j z*".
