FRICTION MATERIALS RESEARCH ^g-pr February 9, 1979 Abex Corporation An 1C tndutlriu Company Research Center MAHWAH, NEW JERSEY 07430 TEE. 201-520.3450 TO: Mr. R.^E'. Nelson /i SUBJECT: . Dow-Corning/ Paper for June SAS Meeting The subject-paper refers to Molykote Q5-7365 and related compositions, trademarked Lubolid. This material is used in our 720 pad as ABD-1152. Mr. Bethke has stated that the people at Essen used it in place of MoS^ since they saw no difference in performance or any other property, and^the cost was somewhat less. George Kubczak has been here to introduce this product (March 1978) and we have done some experimenting with it. It is reportedly a mixture including MoS^ and other ingredients. To date, our results have shown no measurable benefit from its use. It is reported that Jurid is using some 6-8 tons/month of this material in disc pads in Europe. The Falex model no. 1 testing device may be a valuable screening tool for friction and wear properties within a family of compositions, but I question the validity of using it to obtain useful noise and performance evaluations. There are a lot of "could be's" ana "might be's" here for a scientific paper. The dynamometer data (again, n'oise rating is of questionable value) are not presented, so how can a reader judge their significance? In summary, the concept of synergistic combinations of temperature-stable lubricants is a novel one, and certainly merits further study. The paper, however, makes some claims that are really not backed up ir, a rigorous manner. RAP cc: Indelicato R. L. Cutler R. A. Pearce SCI 02189
