Adrian, P.E., Administrator Occupational Health Branch Division of Occupational Health and Radiation Control Enel INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE SURVEY Georgia Pacific Corporation Gypsum Division - Acme Plant Quanah, Texas On May 9, 1974, an asbestos evaluation was made in the Joint System Department of Georgia Pacific Corporation, Gypsum Division - Acme Plant. The survey was requested by Mr. Ed Sing, Safety Supervisor, as a follow-up to a survey performed by this office on September 8, 1972. The previous survey indicated excessive exposures to the compound mixer, the sacker, and the sack stacker. Since an exposure problem was indicated, the company has requested information concerning training and equipment necessary for one of their employees to perform periodic monitoring of asbestos levels as required by the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Standards, Paragraph 1910.93a. The evaluation performed was intended as a check on dust levels and to instruct Georgia Pacific employees on sampling methods. One batch was run, and a breathing zone sample was taken for the mixer. Sacks of asbestos were dumped into the mixing hopper for about fifteen minutes. Analysis of the filter indicated a fiber concentration of about 2.3 fibers per cubic centimeter of air. The sample was belpw the current asbestos exposure limit of 5 fibers per cubic centimeter, but above the standard of 2 fibers per cubic centimeter of air~which will take effect on July 1, 1976. The single sample taken is not adequate to project the actual time-weighted average exposure. Time and batch mixing limitations on this day did not allow adequate sampling for projection of average exposures. An adequate sampling schedule should be established so that time-weighted average exposures are determined at least every 6 months. This sampling schedule will provide accurate records of each employee's exposure. Respectfully submitted,. 'Jerry,/. These were necessary in order to satisfy a portion of those citations. Some of the material may need to be altered for your particular operation. If you do not already have these written procedures as part of your opera* tion, they should then be incorporated. I am sending along enough booklets to issue to all your employees in joint systems; however, additional copies will have to be ordered direct. See the back of the booklets for the order address.
