T. deTreville, March 4, 1970 At 830 today (3/4/70) I mat with Dr. daTravilla in his office in Pittsburgh to outline for him the purposes and the general pro gram for the Asbestos Conference which we seek to hold in Du Pont, l told him I did not think that this Conference could serve as a prototype instruction meeting of the type which Industrial Hygiene Foundation hopes to begin providing for member companies. This is because of the austerity program and our obligation to do as much of the work in connection with this Conference by ourselves as is possible. I specifically asked for his participation in the presen tation of the health aspects of asbestos. We discussed a review of health aspects which-would include the history of lung disease of asbestos, including asbestosis, carcinoma, and mesothelioma. Cr. deTreville is enthusiastic about participating, and has told me that he will be available on any one of the following detest April 1, 2, 6, 7, or 9. I am_to write him a letter reviewing what we dis cussed today and the tentative program outline. Ha ttviawtd for M ton. of th* functions which XHF is seeking to fulfill. These would include participation in the combined Accreditation Program for Industry in Industrial Health. This joint effort will bring together the Occupational Health Znetitute, the Industrial Medical Association, the American Industrial Hygiene Association, the American Confarence for Governmental Industrial Hygieniacs, the Academy of Occupational Medicine and will supersede an accreditation which was begun a long time ago by the American College of Surgeons. He spoke of obtaining applications for accred itation from Companies in which they would describe their effort in industrial health including procedures for review of hazardous pro cesses or opsrstions such as that in which I was engaged yesterday (Belle). He thinks that this kind of information should bs avail able in connection with the government'a expected interest in obtaining data on compliance with health and safety laws. Note* He told me that later this month he will address a meet- - - ing of the American Textile Manufacturing Association which will be attended by Du Pont's president, Mr. McCoy. The candidate, Sr. Harley, it expected to remain at South Carolina in the intervening years and carry on a research program associated with the effort of Or. Sross rn Pittsburgh. A staff of pathologists under Or. Harley and the department head will be available for outside pathology work. The published proceedings of the Foundation's Fibrous Oust Seminar which X attended about a year and half ago will issue later this month. Copies of the Proceedings should be avail able for those who attend the Asbestos Conference. Part of the proceedings consist of an address by an epidemiologist. Or. Enterline of Pittsburgh, who had data on the fate of persons exposed to asbestos. Some were exposed for brief periods such as two years then removed from industry and later in their lives developed lung cancer. Others beginning work about the same time and continuing to work in the asbestos industry developed asbestosis, and from thif many subsequently died. These data should be described in the Proceedings. This is an indication that high exposure levels for fairly brief periods may subse quently result in deleterious effects. Again, it may be indica tive of the production of lung cancer by asbestos even when asbestosis does not develop. JFM/rlm/bjd DUP 0901373
