L A N Z C o n su lta n t o 5001 Grant Avenue Philadelphia, PA 19114 i Tel. (215) 637-7432 i November 11 1975 Mr. Vincent LaCarrubba Reddaway Manufacturing Co. 32 Euclid Ave. Newark N. J. Dear Vincent: This report covers my visit to your factory on Tuesday November 4 1975. Six samples of airborne asbestos fibers were collected* at that time and all data as well as the results of the analyses are shown on the original data sheets which are enclosed. Sample R-l. There were a number of places where abrasion of the dry yarn oc 1 curred in this operation and `the result was lower than I expected. While there is little doubt that the concentration of asbestos fibers in the air was low at the f time of test, the true value may have been significantly different than the 0.29 * 5 fibers/cc which was found. This is because the sampling time was not long enough to give the desired concentration of fibers on the filter. For the best accuracy, the sampling time should be just long enough to give a count of 100 fibers in 100 fields, or a value of average fibers/field of 1.00. In practice, good accuracy can be obtained if the value forav. fibers/field is between 0.59 and 2.00; however sample R-l had only an average of 0.11 fibers/field. The accuracy of the result could have been improved by counting more fields, say 500, but this would have been expensive and, in sy opinion, unnecessary since even if the true 'Value were twice as high as the value found (hot likely), the fibers/cc would have been well below OSKA limits. The desired sampling time can be estimated by dividing 170 by the expected result for fibers/cc. Thus, the next time this operation is to be sampled, you would divide 170 by 0.29 and find that sampling should be for 586 minutes. Long l i sampling times such as this are generally impractical; about the bast you can do l is to sample as long as you reasonably can, about 3 or 4 hours. Sample R-2. There is an error in "Time Finished" which should read 11:45; however, the elapsed time is recorded correctly. The result of 1.8* fibers/cc is less than the OSHA maximum. This was a wet-weaving operation and the-dust pro bably came as much from the nearby creels as from the weaving itself. ' To check this, you may wish to take environmental samples at different places in this room. The recommended sampling time for a retest is 90 minutes. Sample R-3. This sampling covered two operations: the drill press and the vertical sander. An oscillatind fan was blowing across the drill press towards the operator. This probably increased the test result measured on the operator. . An average of 3.7 fibers/cc was found for the combined operations. While meeting the present OSHA standard of 5 fibers/cc, some improvement is necessary to meet the 2 fibers/cc limit which is effective July i, 1976. (215) 637-7432 I May 3, 1976 Mr. Vincent LaCarrubba Reddaway Manufacturing Co. 32 Euclid Avenue Newark, N. J. Dear Vince, This report covers tests carried out on the four samples of airborne asbestos dust which you sent to me recently. I The analyses were carried out using the procedures of the U. S. Public ; Health Service. The fibers over 5 microns per field were determined and the j fibers over 5 microns per cc were calculated from this value and the data you ? submitted for sampling time and rate. You also asked for an analysis of particles less than 5 microns. On examination of the samples, it proved to be impractical to count all particles under 5 microns; -instead, all particles which could be classified as fibers ( i. e.* having a length/diameter ratio of 3 or more) were counted. The results are. shewn in the following table: Sample No. RE-7 RE-8 RE-9 RE-10 i Sampling time, min. V iT 120 105 480 Rate, liters/min. 2 2 2 2 Volume sampled, liters 290 240 210 960 Fibers over 5 microns: Fibers/field 0.48 0.67 1.20 0.13 Fibers/cc 0.57 0.95 2.0 0.046 Total fibers : Fibers/field 1.6% 2.12 3.66 0.42 Fibers/cc 1.9 3.0 6.0 0.20 % of total fibers over 5 microns 29 . 32 33 23 None of the samples gave results which exceeded the new OSHA limit of 2 fibers over 5 microns per cc which is effective July 1, 1976. However, sample RE-9 was right on the limit. I*ve shown the per cent of total fibers which are longer than 5 microns I and this value seems to be about 30%. There were insufficient fibers counted for sanple RE-10 for the percentage figure to be representative. The value for per j cent of total fibers over 5 microns may be important in future tests to indicate if your new equipment is more effective in removing longer or shorter fibers.
