During April and May 1977, the writer conducted the OSHA required semi-annual asbestos survey at the Trenton Chemical Plant. The results of this study are listed on the attached data sheets opposite the corresponding job or area location. The air samples identified with an asterisk on the data sheets were collected concurrently and immediately adjacent to air samples collected by representatives of the Michigan Department of Public Health (MIOSHA).
Note that only air sample (29) is in excess of the two fiber per cubic centimeter Permissible Exposure Limit. Industrial Hygiene recommends that "pad only" inspection operations be equipped with local exhaust ventilation. We feel that a downdraft system similar to the OEM grinder inspection ventilation would be feasible at the "pad only" inspection work stations. Personal protective equipment in the form of approved dust respirators is now required at the "pad only" inspection operations during the time period necessary to install the necessary engineering controls, CFR 1910.1001 (d) . In regard to employee notifi cation, CFR 1910.1001 (i)(3). Industrial Hygiene does not believe that any notification of excessive exposure is re quired because the affected individual (R. Smith 4414) was wearing an approved respirator at the time of this survey.
Although air sample (24) was not in excess of the Permis sible Exposure Limit, it was of sufficient magnitude to generate a second MIOSHA evaluation on May 25, 1977, i.e., air sample (28). The elevated airborne asbestos levels observed on April 12, 1977 at the Mvr oven aluminum gasket inspection and packing operation may have been partially caused by pedestal fans dispersing asbestos dust into the aluminum gasket inspection area from the adjacent Tennant sweeper dump station. Industrial Hygiene recommends that the Tennant sweeper dump station be relocated in a less congested area of the plant. If relocation of the dump station does not reduce the airborne asbestos levels at the Myr oven pack ing and aluminum gasket inspection work station, additional controls such as local exhaust ventilation will have to be evaluated.

Re: SEMt-ANNUAL ASBESTOS SURVEY
Please be advised that OSHA Regulations, CFR 1910.100 (f)(2)(ii), require additional monitoring at any new work stations where exposure to asbestos may reasonably hi foreseen to exceed the Permissible Exposure Limit.
