Gressler Subject NEAR MISS, GAS ESCAPE PEDRICKT0WN, POLY BUILDING 513 On May 26, 1970, at approximately 2 15 a.m.. 60% of the contents of Poly #1 was drained to the floor in Building 513. A dual computer failure was experienced at approximately 2:00 a.m. Up until this time we had been running on the supervisory computer (back-uo computer) with no apparent problems. When the supervisory failed, console technician, re-started the computer. It failed once again and he re-started It once again. It then failed a third time. Upon re-starting the computer the third time it opened the bottom valve, drain valve and blowdown valve on Polv #1. Poly #1 had been reacting approximately eight hours and forty-five minutes. It was approximately forty-five minutes away from normal blowdown. About 60% of the contents from Poly #1 was blown to the first floor while the other 40% was blown to blowdown tank #41. Due to the excessive amount of back pressure on the drain line, the drain line was twisted upward about 45. lead technician, sounded the master gas alarm end evacuated personnel. The emergency fans and fog system were activated. The M.S.A. gas analizer also activated. closed the Yarway valve on Poly #1 but by this time the poly had emptied. All computer action_was stopped at 8:00 a.m. and did not resume until definite guide lines were formulated. These guide lines are attached.
