Beginning in 1976 we began to sam p le se lec ted JM em p lo y ees to
determ ine the am ount of organic fluorine (R -F ) and inorganic fluoride (FI
in th eir blood. O ur su b je cts had varying d e g re e s of ex p o su re a n d /o r
contact w ith flu o ro c h e m ic a ls. B ecau se of the te ch n ic al d iffic u ltie s and
th e length of tim e needed to p e rfo rm the te s ts , we w ere lim ite d in the
num ber of su b jects te s te d . E ach subject w as in terv iew ed in an attem p t
to d eterm in e what p o ssib le co n tact w ith flu o rin e o r flu o rid e they m ay
have had in ad d itio n to th e ir w o rk e x p o s u re . Ite m s su ch a s household
products, w ater supply, d en tifric es, d ru g s, etc. , w ere co n sid ered .

Subjects included (1) long and s h o rt tim e flu o ro c h em ica l production

lo tio n s , (5) o ffic e w o r k e r s in d o s e p ro x im ity to flu o ro c h e m ic a l p ro d u c tio n
fa c ilitie s and (6) c o n tro ls .
W ith only tw o e x c e p tio n s, in o rg a n ic flu o rid e le v e ls w ere found to be w ithin the "norm al lite ra tu re le v e ls". One of the ex ceptions had had a rec en t H F b u m . In g e n e ra l, we found e le v a te d R - F le v e ls p ro p o rtio n a l to the length of tim e th a t had been spent by the em ployee in the production a r e a s . We also found th a t la b o ra to ry w o rk e rs , w ith fo rm e r e x p o su re , but none fo r 15*20 y e a rs , had elev atio n s of R F (above lite ra tu re 'n o rm a ls ') but of low m ag n itu d e.
S e v e ra l e m p lo y e e s h a d m u ltip le s a m p le s te s te d o v e r a 1 1( 2.-2 y e a r p erio d , and in g e n e ra l the v alu es stay ed in the sam e ra n g e . T h e re w as one exception. T hat p erso n had a significant ris e w hich we felt could be explained by a com bination of in c re a se d production lev els and failu re to w ear p re sc rib e d p e rso n a l p ro tectiv e d ev ices. T h is p erso n had the hig h est d etec tab le le v e l of R F (71 pp m ), and it w as co n firm e d by re p e a t testin g . He has been rem oved fro m all flu o ro ch em ical contact and w eekly d e te rm in a tio n s of blood R - F lev els and 2 4 -h o u r u rin e ex c retio n of R *F w ill be done. It should be noted that one s e rie s of te s ts has d eterm in e d th a t R -F is p re s e n t in th e u rin e .
A ttem pts have been m ade to identify the ch em icals th at m ake up the o rg a n ic flu o rin e c o n te n t. T h is su b je c t w ill be c o v e re d by o th e rs a t 3M who a re involved in th e an aly tical p ro c e d u re s.
The attached ch a rts give the ranges of R F /F values that we found in o u r employees.
