Akron - D/0020, 5-H INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE SURVEY - PEDRICKTOWN DATE YOUR LETTER DATE THIS LETTER 3-23-79 During January 16-18, 1979 an industrial hygiene survey was conducted at the Pedricktown plant. Samples for antimony (Sb) were taken in conjunction with OSHA to resolve differences in results obtained previously. Both BFG and OSHA results of the sampling were in good agreement, showing Sb exposures to be well below allowable limits. Lead handling procedures (in light of the new lead standard) were reviewed, as were the noise control efforts in cubing operations. Some improvements are necessary, as is further evaluation of the magnitude of lead exposures. I would like to thank Messrs. Lead Install spacers in plenum so that adequate airflow can be maintained at the pre-compound local exhaust hood. Plug funnel leading to 6" Henschel mixer to prevent fugitive dust from escaping into the operator's breathing zone. Replace boot connecting hoppers to mixer on both 6" and 9" lines. Continue to evaluate personnel exposures to lead during each stage of lead handling i.e., weighing, mixing, clean-up, bag disposal, etc. Prepare an administrative control strategy to limit the length of time a worker can safely weigh particular lead compounds based on monitoring data now being collected. 2. Noise Review Environmental Technology Corporation reports with employees shown to have hearing shifts to ensure that the Goodrich hearing conservation program is being implemented. Supply audiodosimeter results to the individual responsible for counseling employees on hearing shifts so that they can be compared with employee audiograms. Evaluate the effectiveness of spray-on insulation to lower noise levels inside the 6" line cuber room (see accompanying literature). DISCUSSION: The pre-compounding exhaust hood ventilation system has been modified to allow for all airflow to be directed from either hood by way of a blast gate. When all airflow is from one hood, the negative pressure created inside the hood plenum is such that the hood nearly collapses. The installation of spacers should prevent this collapse and allow for the maintenance of increased airflow at the hood slot. A funnel has been installed leading directly to the Henschel to allow for the direct addition of colors. The funnel, being open, allows for fugitive dust to escape from the Henschel back into the workroom. Discussion (con't) The evaluation for lead exposure must continue. Less dusty lead pigments should be worked into the system as they become available. Consideration should be given to an administrative control strategy designed to limit the length of time various lead based pigments can be weighed. Before the administrative controls can be deter mined, it will be necessary for the plant to obtain data on worker exposures to lead by each pigment. The Environmental Technology Corporation reports must be reviewed with each employee identified by ETC as having a hearing shift. Also, the audiodosimetry results must be compared with the ETC reports by job class and, if available, by individual, to ensure that the employee is properly counseled as to his/her on or off the job noise exposure. Enclosed is information on a type of cellulose spray-on insulation marketed for noise control. Such insulation can be evaluated for noise control effectiveness inside the 6" line cuber room.
