JBF:sel Enclosure Also Licensed in District of Columbia NOTES ON SAMPLING DURING THE EXPERIMENT PLAINTIFF'S EXHIBIT 5111,0 dhas. ofh'ct On Thursday, May 16, 1991, Materials Analytical Services, Inc. (MAS) agreed to perform an experiment for the law firm of Richard F. Scruggs in Pascagoula, Mississippi. The experiment was designed to see if asbestos fibers were released during the cutting/sawing of the material marked "Kaylo" (on the outer cardboard wrapping) and if released what the concentration would be. The experiment took place in a vacated/sealed office belonging to the Scruggs law firm on Saturday, May 18, 1991 in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Alan Segrave of MAS performed air/dust sampling before, during and after the cutting of the asbestos containing product labelled "Kaylo". Protective clothing and respiratory protection were utilized for the experiment. The experiment involved establishing ambient levels of asbestos in the air by taking air samples outside the contained area. These samples were taken at 10 liters/minute flow rate and were labelled 1, 2 and 3. Results of these three air samples analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were negligible. Air samples (4,5,6) were run inside the contained area, (while the material marked "Kaylo" was sealed in plastic) at 10 liters/minute flow rate. Again the samples were analyzed by TEM and the asbestos concentrations were negligible. Samples 1-6 represent levels of possible contaminants inside and outside the containment area before the "Kaylo" material was cut. Samples 7, 8, and 9 (at 10 liters per minute flow rate) and IP, 2P at (2 liters per minute flow rate) were taken as the "Kaylo" was removed from the bag and placed on the sawhorse. IP and 2P represent personnel air samples taken on Alan Segrave and John, who is the person designated to cut the "Kaylo". A series of cuts into the "Kaylo" were made using a hand saw, -and clouds of material were liberated into the air. Other actions simulating what a worker might do during the cutting were performed such as brushing one's arm off, tapping the saw with the hand to clean it, etc. 9d 800 Ifrsfrl 82-80-tGGl Page 2 After the last cut was made all physical activity in the area ceased while the sampling continued for approximately ten minutes. Samples 10, 11, 12 (at 10 liters/minute flow rate) and personnel samples 3P, 4P (at 2 liters/minute flow rate) were taken as the material was swept into piles and placed in plastic bags. During the cutting and sweeping portions of the experiment significant asbestos concentrations were measured by TEM analyses. In addition to the air samples taken, dust samples (1, 2, 3) were taken to measure dust that may have fallen into precleaned containers of a known area. Dust sample 1 was voided due to the fact that during the sweeping of material a significant amount of material was swept into the dust container. Dust sample 2 is representative of the material that was settling out of the air and after TEM analysis was performed, significant levels of asbestos were found to have settled into the tin. Dust sample 3 represents a sealed tin taken to the project (inside the containment, etc.) and back to the lab. No asbestos structures were found in dust sample 3.
