V 12 BRAKING SYSTEM Make a note of the position and colour of the brake shoe return springs. Remove the springs, using Special Tool No. 64927026, and remove the brake shoe and parking brake Ipver assemblies. NOTE: The brake shoe return springs must be renewed at brake reline/overhaul inter vals. Discard the old springs. Secure the wheel cylinder pistons with, string or a rubber band. Separate the parking brake levers from the shoes. Slacken the lock screws and remove the thrust ( brake levers. Remove the auto-adjust stop plate and remove both auto-adjust assemblies. Cleaning and Inspection Clean the brake shoes, drum and backplate assembly, dry cleaning where possible. Use vacuum extraction equipment to remove the brake shoe dust which may contain asbestos panicles. Use solvents only where it. is necessary to remove oil or grease contamination. Do NOT allow solvents, oil or grease to contaminate the brake linings. Examine the brake shops, linings and parking lever return springs for damage or wear. Renew or reline the brake shoes if the lining material is contaminated, damaged or worn down to almost the level of the rivet heads. Examine the brake drums for excessive wear, damage, ovality and taper. Renew or., repair the drums as necessary.
