Reed A status meeting was held December 18, 1984 with Plant Engineering, Purchasing, Stores, Industrial Hygiene and Maintenance concerning replacement of asbestos sheet and asbestos pipe gasket material. Areas that will be impacted reported the following action plans: Engineering has completed the selection of non-asbestos substitutes and is in progress of updating Pipe specs, which will be completed no later than the end of February '85. After completion of the above, all capital projects at Chocolate Bayou will be installed using non-asbestos gasketing. Stores will reduce current stocks of asbestos gaskets until substitutes will be purchased. Stores will inventory existing stock of sheet and pipe asbestos gaskets to determine quantity of replacement materials required. Purchasing will investigate the possibility of returning the existing stock of asbestos sheet and pipe gaskets to vendors for credit or dis posal. Purchasing will determine the availability and time of delivery of the replacement non-asbestos sheet and pipe gaskets. Stores and Maintenance will determine if gasket supplies, stocked in expense stock, may be revised so that some reduction in plant stock can be realized. Target date to complete sheet and pipe gasket spec revisions and plant * inventory conversion is the end of the first quarter '85, after which all maintenace usage will be non-asbestos materials. Replacement requirements for exchanger gaskets, pump and valve packing, pump and valve gasketing and other asbestos applications will be addressed in the same manner as above with targeted completion by the end of 1985.
