Industrial Hygiene Digest April. 1964 315 HEW To Handle Information on Air Pollution. On January 24, Or. Jerome B. Wiesner, then director of the Office of Science and 4 Technology, announced that the Department of Health, Education and Welfare has been assigned responsibility within the Federal Government for assuring full and adequate handling of scientific information in air pollution prevention and control. This action is consistent with the recently enacted Public Law 88-206 which assigns to HEW several responsibilites in air . pollution regulation and research and development. The action is a significant step in coordinating federally generated research information. Jls expected to set the precedent for a series of delegations to individual Government agenffies, whereby the agency will act as a clearing house for the research documents and data resulting from the activities of all agencies engaged in similar scientific or engineering work. This concept is one of the major recommendations of a report entitled Science Government, and Information (popularly known as the Weinberg Report) issued in January 1963 by President Kennedy. The Department of Health, .Education and Welfare will collect data and information from both Government and non-governmfent facilities significantly involved in air pollution research, and will organize this information; consolidate it, and provide state-of-the-art summaries. The service will be available to the public as well as to officials of other Government agencies. --Sci.
