Groundwater nonitoring iMplu collected at the Delaware Uni Mast by Geraghty a ItiUar, Inc., wn analysed and tastad for specified coapounda and paxanetara. Tba analyses and testing wara conducted In accordance with EPA approved or accepted procedurea [1,2).
2. SUMARY Table 1 shove tha analytical reaulta for the specified octal analyses and Table 2 above the applicable quality control data. Table 3 shows tha analytical results for the requested chloride analyses while Table 3 shows the applicable quality control data. Tables 5-34 shova the analytical results for the specified organic analyses. Figures 1-17 shows the applicable chroaatograaa for the OC/HS analysis for the specified organic analyses.
3. SAMPLING
The sanples were collected at tha Delaware River plant sites by Geraghty A Miller, Inc. personnel. The sanples received by CSC/ MIC for analysis arrived in V.S. CPA approved containers.
4. ANALYSES
4.1 ICTALS ANALYSIS The analyses of tba aaaplea for the specified natals were performed in accordance to U.S. KPA approved or accepted procedures (1).

4.3 ORGANIC ANALYSES
Sanplss Iron tbs Delaware River Plant were analyzed for bensaldehyde, benzyl chloride, benzyl alcohol, banzai chloride and Aroclor 124R. one liter and 0.01 liter sanples were extracted using eethylone chloride and hexane, respectively and the resulting 1-aL extracts analyzed using capillary CC/EC and capillary CC/MS analysis techniques. Table 5 suuaarizes the physical properties and identifications of sanples included in this study. Thirty* five sanples were extracted and analyzed with and without centri fugation in order to determine if the analyzes listed above (and in particular Aroclor 1248) are associated with the pure water phase or with the particulate/organic component of these sanples. Tables 6-14 sunnarize the capillary CC/EC analytical results for centrifuged sanples. Tables 1S-23 sunnarise capillary CC/EC ana lytical results for uncentrifuged sanples. Tables 24-32 sunnarize the capillary CC/MS analytical results for centrifuged sanples and Tables 33-34 sunnarise capillary GC/MS analytical results for eelected uncentrifuged sanples. Appendix A Figures 1-17, shows all CC/MS total ion and selected ion chronatograas fren the anal ysis reported in Tables 24-34.
All high values of benzyl chloride and Aroclor 1248 appear to be associated with the partieulate/organic cenponent of the corre sponding saaple and the benzaldehyde and benzyl alcohol appear to be prinarlly associated with the water portion of each sanple. >0 bonsai chloride was detected in any sanple analysed.

A single sample labeled 'Sample Point 51-2, 2-1-13* was received for tin analysis of 2,3,7,8-tatrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (2370TCDD) and 2,3,7,0-tetrachlorodibenzofuran (237t-TCDF). Ttia sampla had been aasi9nad MAC log number 1-B3-02-04-04.
The aample that waa analyzed coniiatad of the bottom layer of a two phase sample. This layer was a dark organic layer with a very distinctive odor. The analysis of this layer proved to be quite a challenge. This Is due to the significant amount of aromatics which were present. These compounds either eluted the TCDD and TCOF off the clean up column used to retain them in the clean up procedures or were so similar to TCDD and TCDF that they inter fered in the final analysis.
The analyses were finally carried out by taking 1 gram of the lower layer organic and dissolving this in 100 mL of petroleum ether. One mL aliquots of this dilution were used for the sample, repli cate, low spike (1 ppm) and high spike (10 ppm). All aliquots were spiked with "C,-2371-tcdo and *'Cl.-2378-TCDr to serve as surrogates in the quantitative analyses.
These 1 mL aliquots were diluted with 40 mL of petroleum ether and then repeatedly partitioned against 30 mL portions of concentrated sulfuric acid until the sulfuric acid did not change color. After the sulfuric acid washes were completed the petroleum ether was partitioned against 50 mL of organic free water and then dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The samples were then passed through a multistage column consisting of (top to bottom) 2 grams of silica, 4 grams of 40t concentrated sulfuric acid on silica, one gram of silica, 2 grams of 3fl KOH on silica and finally oee gram of silica. This column was then flushed with an additional 50 mL of hexane with the entire effluent passing onto a Koala B alumina column which retained the 2,3,7,I-TCDD. The taoela column was eluted with 10 mL of 21 CSaClj/hexane to elute FCBs and other
AOhS 022SB7 1
potential intarfarancas and this fraction was discarded. This COlimn was than alutad with 15 sL of sot ClaCla/hMant which was collected and concentrated to 50 al and subaittad for GC/HS analysis.
The GC/HS analyses ware carried out on a Hewlett Packard 59I5B GC/HS systen. The gas chroautographic analyses ware performed on a 10 sister DB-5 capillary colunn with the Mass spectroeieter operating in the selected ion aonitoring node. Quantitation was achieved by ratioing the observed anount of 2371-TCOO or 237STCDF to the isotopically labeled surrogates.
Table 1 shows the results of the analysis for 2170-TCDD. Table 2 Shows the results for the analysis of 2171-TCDF. Note that in Table 2 the low and high spike values are conparable to the saaple and replicate. This results iron the fact that the spike levels were too low to be observed. The total aaiount of TCDFs present in one of the sanplcs is also shown in Table 2. Figure 2 illustrates the actual ion traces allowing that at least twelve TCDFs were present. Nota that there are M possible tetrachlorodlbeniofurans. It is possible that other TCDFs coelute with the 2171-TCDF and therefore the result given in Table 2 should be viewed as the naxiaua amount of 2J78-TCDF which could be present.
