Purpose The purpose of this practice is to set forth the principles for ensuring the protection of employes from exposure to materials containing asbestos used in non-production applications including new construction, renovation, demolition, maintenance, tool ing, machinery and equipment, and protective apparel. II. Application This Practice applies to all Company facilities in North America. It is recommended that subsidiaries and affiliates adopt similar Practice. 111. Background V Asbestos is a recognized human carcinogen. Asbestos fibers may be released from materials by sawing, cutting, drilling or similar operations. Construction materiais, notably pipe insulation and sprayed fireproofing, may release asbestos fibers because of the natural deterioration of the materials over a long period of time. Exposure to these asbestos fibers through inhalation may be a health risk to employes and it is intended, where feasible, to eliminate the use of non-production materials containing asbestos. U.S. regulatory agencies are discouraging the use of asbestos in all applications where substitutes are available or being developed. It is expected that regulations will be promulgated in the future which will reduce asbestos consumption by -restricting asbestos production and prohibiting non-essential uses of asbestos. Operating Principles I For ensuring the protection of employes potentially exposed to non-product ion materials that contain asbestos each division/plant must: . identify and examine uses of materials that contain asbestos within the plant. The attached check list should be used as a guide. . specify where feasible non-asbestos materials when purchasing new tooling, machinery and equipment, and protective apparel. . specify where feasible non-asbestos materials in maintenance work. . specify non-asbestos materials for all new construction and renovation work. . instruct employes in good work practices and provide, where feasible, engineering control of dust generated during maintenance, or replacement of asbestos containing .mater ials. . provide respiratory and other protection in compliance with OSHA standard 1910.1001 "Asbestos", for employes potentially exposed to asbestos and where feasible engineering control b unavailable.
