0007-SWP-000124632 0007-SWP-000124633 The performance of a paint job, regardless of the materials used, is dependent on the cleanliness and smoothness of the surface and the conditions under which, the paint is.applied. We have outlined below the basic requirements aid have indicated the typical prepaxation-ofsurface specifications that have been found ade quate'. T. Dirt and foreign matter must be removed. Loose dirt may be removed by blowihg clean with a x pressure or bristle brushes. It is important that surface deposits of oil or grease are not spread Over additional areas in the cleaning process. 2. Glossy Surfaces on old paint films should be roughened to provide a "tooth". This may be ac complished by sanding the surface or applying S-W Preparite. 3. Mold or Mildew must be removed com pletely from the surface. Use tri-sodium phosphate solution (6 oz. per gallon) or a proprietary mildewicide. Rinse thoroughly with clear water and allow to dry before painting. 4. Oil and Grease should be removed with mineral spirits or S-W Exolvent. 5, Rust and Mill Scale--These can be removed by sandblasting, flame cleaning or wire brushing (manual or power). Blasting to white metal pro duces the best possible surface for painting. The application of the priming coat of paint should be the same day the surface is cleaned, and in the case of sandblasling, within 2 to 3 hours. 6. Exterior Wood must be clean and dry. No painting to be done immediately after a rain or <luring rainy weather, or when the temperature is below 50F. Knots and pitch streaks shall be scraped or burned, then coated with shellac before priming coat is applied. All nail holes or small openings shdll be carefully filled with White Lead Putty after the priming coat has dried. 7. Exteribr Brick, Stucco and Concrete shall be free from dirt and loose or excess mortar. New concrete, brick and stuccD shall be allowed to cure at least 6, months before painting. If necessary to paint sooner, treat surface with zinc sulphate wash (3 lbs. per gallon of water), brushing surface free of loose crystals when dry. Do not paint after a rain but allow several days for thorough drying. a. Structural Steel shall be cleaned free of mill scale, rust and foreign matter by (1) sandblasting (2) flame cleaning (3) wire brushing or (4) scraping. Any grease shall be removed with solvent. Loose and scaling paint shall be scraped and wire brushed to sound metal. Dust and dirt, should be removed by dry brushing or air blast prior to painting. No paint shall be applied over a damp or frosted surface, or when the temperature is below 5QF. 9. Galvanized Iron shall be cleaned thoroughly with solvent to remove grease and residue on the surface. Satisfactory preparation may he obtained with chemical washes used as directed by the manu facturer. For best results, new galvanized iron should be allowed to weather 6 months prior to painting. All galvanized iron shall be given a special primer such as S-W Galvanized Iron Primer or S-W Grip-Clad Primer. Galvanized iron that has been exposed to the weather for long periods of time and shows rust shall be primed with a metal protective primer such as Kromik Metal Primer. 10. Copper Surfaces--In general most Oil paints will adhere satisfactorily to copper, providing the surface is cleaned free of dirt and foreign matter. 11. Interior Plaster Walls must be allowed to dry thoroughly, usually requiring at least 30 days before painting. Ventilation while drying is essential and in cold, damp weather, rooms must be heated. Damaged places shall be repaired with Plastic Patch. 12. Interior Brick and Concrete must be thoroughly seasoned. Ventilation while drying is essential. Prior to painting, the surface shall be given a zinc sulphate wash (3 lbs. per gallon of water). When dry, the surface shall be brushed completely free of loose crystals. 13. Interior Woodwork and Trim--All fin ishing lumber and flooring shall be delivered pro tected from the weather and stored on the premises in dry warm rooms to prevent absorption of mois ture, shrinkage and roughening of the wood before finishing. All surfaces shall be sanded smooth, with the grain and never across it. Surface blemishes shall be corrected and the room cleaned of dust before pro ceeding with finishing coats. REQUIREMENTS FOR METAL PROTECTION Water and atmospheric fumes promote the corrosion which destroys iron and steel. The protective film, therefore, must be highly impervious to these elements and tenacious in maintaining a continuous film. The priming coat must (1) Contain pigments which retard ur inhibit corrosion. (2) Be hard enough to resist abrasion and yet (3) elastic enough to accommodate the expansion and contraction, of metal.
