F i s c h e r ASBESTOS CEMENT PIPE/RECDMMENDED WORK PRACTICES The p u r p o s e of this b u l l e t i n is to advise that we do not desire to sell our A/C pipe products where the purchaser w i l l k n o w i n g l y expose bis w o rkers to p o t e n t i a l l y hazardous l e v e l s of asbe s t o s dust that can be created by use of nonrecommended tools. Both the AWWA (Manual #16) and the A/C Pipe Producers Association have published booklets on safe work practices to be foll o w e d in the instal l a t i o n of A/C pipe. Both of these booklets clearly state that the use of abrasive disc Cools should not be used as they can create hazardous l e v e l s of a s b e s t o s dust. An a d v i s o r y c a u t i o n notice is j a f f i x e d to each length of pipe which states in part "Do not use power saws to cut this pipe". Special short lengths (POPS) and P.V.C. MOA's have been made available so that the need to cut and machine A/C pipe in the field is g r e a t l y reduced. Special tools for c u t t i n g and machining A/C pipe in the field which do not produce high levels of asbestos dust have been d e veloped and are readily available. Field demonstrations have been held which have been attended by thousands of contractors, where proper work practices have been demonstrated and where booklets on safe work practies have been passed out to A/C pipe installers. Special mailings have been sent out to all of our c ustomers w h i c h have advised the Importance of following recommended work practices. These m a i l i n g s have all included copies of the A/C Pipe Producers "Recommended Work Practices" booklet. All of the a bove steps have been taken as we b e l i e v e it to be essential that all workers who handle A/C pipe in the field are not subjected to hazardous levels of asbestos dust. Tour e fforts to Inform installers of A/C pipe of the i m p o r t a n c e of f o l l o w i n g r e c o mmended w o r k p r a c t i c e s , and to provide the m e a n s to install our pipe w h e r e the need to S uppl em ent to #4 (Division Bulletin) cut and m a c h i n e in the field is e l iminated or reduced, has had a significant effect in reducing the instances where abrasive disc cutting and beveling equipment is used. A l t h o u g h the amount of usage of abrasive disc tools has been very s i g n i f i c a n t l y reduced, it has not been enti r e l y eliminated. i If you observe installations where p r o v i s i o n s been taken to protect the workers health, the procedure should be followed: have not following 1. Advise the inst a l l e r of what you have observed and that by his not complying with recommended w o r k p ractices he is required by law to "label" the pipe and comply with the full OSHA asbestos regulations. 2. P r o v i d e the inst a l l e r with copies of safe work practice booklets. 3. Document in writ i n g to your s u p e r v i s o r your observation and corrective action you have taken.
