P r o v i s i o n o f adequate v e n t i l a t i o n and re g u la tio n o f m anufacturing ope ra tio n s to a void open exp o s u re o f h o t PCB or h i g h e r ) s h a l l be made. The gases produced when a s k a r e l i s decomposed by v e r y h i g h te m p e r a tu r e s (such as t h a t o f an e l e c t r i c a r c ) in the presence o f a ir or organic Insulating materials contains a high percentage o f hydrogen c h l o r i d e , and small percentages o f carbon d i o x i d e , carbon monoxide, and oxygen. Minute concentrations o f th is combination o f gases are very unpleasant and I r r i t a t i n g , t h u s g i v i n g ampl e w a r n i n g o f t h e i r p r e s e n c e . When n e c e s s a r y , under emergency c o n d itio n s , to enter a space containing a high concentration o f PCB v a p o r o r d e c o m p o s i t i o n p r o d u c t s , a hose mask w i t h b l o w e r , o r b r e a t h i n g e q u i p ment w i t h a s e l f - c o n t a i n e d a i r s u p p ly sh ould be used. A lim ited solvent action (sim ila r to that for paint thinner) on t h e f a t s and o i l s o f t h e s k i n w i t h p r o l o n g e d c o n t a c t may l e a d t o d r y i n g and c h a p p i n g o f t h e s k i n . As w i t h i n s u l a t i n g o i l , some p e o p l e a r e a l l e r g i c t o PCB and c o n t i n u e d e x p o s u r e may r e s u l t 1n s k i n i r r i t a t i o n . B o t h t h e l i q u i d and v a p o r are moderately i r r i t a t i n g to eye tissues. Operating procedures should avoid contact with hot fluids (about 55C). Use o f eye p r o t e c t io n is reconroended. The use o f gloves is n o t recommended. Contaminated c l o t h i n g must be changed and lau n d e re d . Use o f enclosed t r a n s f e r and han dlin g equipm ent, processing equipment and the use o f mechanical washers reduces d ire c t contact. Medicinal washes or detergents follow ed by an a p p l ic a t i o n o f co ld cream w ill e lim inate any i r r i t a t i o n re s u ltin g from askarel coming In to contact w ith an open cu t o r a b r a s i o n .
