Portions of each sanple were node up in physiological cult solution in strengths of 5 and 10,t for guinea pig injection. The pH of the rotoclone sample was 7.5 which should caaao no tissue irritation. That of the sander dust was 9 which is too alkaline to be wall tolerated. The 10? suapsnaicts were injected intraperitcnoally, u aingle doss of 2 o.c. le. 500 tag of dust. The 5? suspensions were administered directly into the lungs by tracheal catheter, 5 doses of 3.5 c.o each at intervals of 6 days, a total of 75 ag of duet. Intraaerltoneal InJeotlona of neither sample were well reoeived; 60% ot those treated with the rotoolone staple died within 2 to 3 weeks and 80< of the ones getting the sender dust were dead in 3 days. All these pigs showed acute lnflsanatory changes about assess of dead cells where large aoouBuletlone of the diet had localized. The early result could not be evaluated except for the faot that it never oocurs after the injection of quarts or asbestos alone. Bovever, there were 3 aniaala that survived for 8 nonthe, 2 reoelvlng rotoolone duet and one, sander duet. In neither of then was there any suggestion of silicosis on gross or niorosoopio examination. An asbeototlo change is not Asbestos Litig. Summary: After further reduction in size the two samples of this nlxture of asbestos, wood fibre, quarts and hydrated oalclua silicate is toxic on lntraperltonaal and intratracheal injection into guinea pigs. The high alkalinity of the sandier dust probably accounts for the earlier _* deaths in the oase of ln&aparltoneal injection where a large do3e la concentrated in a looaliaad cavity and absorption le rapid. However, the deferred deaths from the rotoolone sample with a pH of o..ly 7.5 eug- i / gests sone other injurious property. Asbestos Litig. Saranac Lake 1989 Depos. Exhibit p.35 00030:.
