I sent your letter of March 19 to Jim Whalen. You got a copy of his reply. This indicates there is a shortage. On the other hand, B.J. Chernack's letter of March 12 says the reason has nothing to do with embargos. 1 would tend to disagree with this, but I don't know. I've sent you all the information I can get. I've just discussed this subject with Morris Slackhurst, the Fiber Division man here. He confirms that the Fiber Division at Asbestos used to purchase blue fiber and refine it and grade it and ship it to our other divisions for use, also for resale. B.J. Chernack touched on the main point for the situation in the last sentence of his fir3t paragraph. Morris tells me the blue fiber used to arrive in jute bags which are very dusty. As of the end of this year, no jute bags will be allowed for receiving or shipping any asbestos fiber. It also*1 seeas that this whole health problem is worse with blue and Anosite fibers than our Canadian fiber, so the trend away from it is primarily for tnis reason; also to increase sales of our own fiber as a.result. This whole health problem and the relationship of asbestos to it are getting a lot of attention. As a matter of fact, Morris was just dictating a letter when I talked to him about the small fiber samples which we have been handing out to the schools. It now seems that some schools have forbidden this practice and he wants to know what our policy is going to be. This would seem to be a little ridiculous, but it points up what is happening.
