Kehoe,- Dear Dr. Kehoe:- In connection with the case previously brought to your attention of a farm water well contaminated with leaded gasoline from a Shell Oil Co. of Canada, Ltd. bulk plant;, we have received some additional data. We quote from a letter dated January 22nd. written by our r. MacEwen: "I was talking to ^r. Mitchell again yesterday and I thought it would be of interest to know just howthey handled this problem. As you will recall we advised them not to use the water either for human or animal consumption, and suggested that the well should be pumped dry. 1 The Shell Company installed an automatic pumper which was so arranged that as the level of the water fell the pumper would drop down with it. The water from the well was carried several hundred feet away from the well to a ditch, so that there was very little danger of the same water seeping back into the well. This pumping was continued over a period of nearly three months, in fact until frost set in, and they think it may be necessary to do further pumping in the spring when the frost leaves the ground, and for this reason the installation has been left in position. During the period of pumping water was tanked in by Shell, but the well is being used now, and is apparently quite satisfactory. Incidently the trouble was caused by poor installation on Shell's part and they accepted full responsibility for i t . " We believe this practically closes the incident, unless seepage continues next spring with the leaving of the frost. Yours very truly, J. N.
