IH/EP ^b,ect Asbestos Insulation INTRODUCTION We were notified that asbestos insulation would be stripped from the dust collector on #2 boiler at the Institute Plant. DISCUSSION The area around the dust collector was isolated by ropes and warning signs were visable. Water was used to help control dust. The 3M disposable dust mask was used by all employees in the controlled area. Air samples were taken to evaluate levels of asbestos dust in the air. In some areas the employees were lax in us ing water to wet the insulation. Better control could have been achieved if more water was applied. Several of the employees were not wearing the respiratory protection properly. In the use of the 3M mask, a proper face seal is essential. Both straps of the mask must be used and they must be properly positioned on the back of the head. The principles of the masks use covered in the training sessions must be applied in the field to assure adequate protection.
