Jr. 4 ; .ot?"'} r>v -<? ) ' r ' :* Zl The history ot the General Asbestos A Rubber Company is a prune example of my premise that the 'team engine is the lather of the asbestos textile industry. ' In the vear 1895 there ivas. in the Citv of Charleston. North Carolina, a busv industry known as the Charleston Iron Works. This companv manufactured pumps and steam engines for the phosphate industry in youth Carolina The predecessor companv of General \sbestos & Rubber Companv was the Charleston Metallic Packing Company The founders were Samuel Hughes and George W Williams. The State Charter issued July 18. 1895. described the firm as "a manufacturer of steam, hydraulic and other packings used in the mechanical arts." Its original and primary account was the Charlestown Iron Works. The original factors- was located on Cumberland Street near Meeting Street in downtown Charleston. The business grew steadily and it w-as recapitalized several times. Four additional downtown locations were used. By l0O the man agement decided to produce its own asbestos yarn and cloth and Building 5 at Columbus and East Bay Streets was rented from the American Tobacco Company to house the original cards, spinning frames, twisters and looms. i'tn Februarv !. 10 1(). the Secretary of State authorized the changing of die name of the firm to General Asbestos & Rubber Companv.
