The new work of the Industrial Health D ivision was mentioned. Emphasis was placed on the sign ifican ce of sandblasting research work and the extensive d istrib u tio n of sandblasting processes throughout industry. Dr. Winslow stated that the set-up as fa r as manufacturing problems go is fa ir ly easy. We are not concerned with the physiological p o s s ib ilitie s in th is in v e stig a tio n . The dust problem is the main concern* I t w ill not be possible to do laboratory work, but f ie ld work with reference to dust content and protec tiv e devices forms the basis for the research work to be done. Dr. Thompson commented on the importance of p ra c tic a l e ffic ie n c y of dust protec tion devices. It is hoped that th is study would make some contribution to our knowledge of th is su b ject. Chairman Greenburg stated that plans had been made to Contact with 66 in d u strial plants in Connecticut; with the Ndvy Yards; and with the enameling in dustries. Mr. Dorfan offered the use of the pangborn spot map which shows d iffere n t kinds of sandblasting in use in various lo c a lit ie s . Schubmehl of the General E le c tr ic Company offered the use of X-ray pictures which have been taken during the past s ix years. Mr. Brand of the Pullman Company made the same o ffe r . Dr. Thompson suggested th at a series of X-rays showing increased exposures over varying periods of time would be h elp fu l in th is study. Dr. Thompson suggested that the plants be picked in reference to th eir use of various kinds of devices. Mr. Cameron suggested that the manufacturers be asked to give a l i s t of where their apparatus is being used. Mr. Wahlert said that he would be glad to help in th is matter. Mr. Middleton suggested the p o s s ib ility of studying re circu la tio n , replied to th is by saying that recircu latio n was rarely necessary. Mr. Dorfan Mr. Drinker suggested adding the representative of a dust co lle ctin g company. One such representative has a place on the committee a t the present tim e. Mr. Dorfan suggested adding Mr. P. J . Potter of the I&ngborn Corporation as a consultant, as he has had many years of experience and has been a representative of the National Founders A ssociation. I t was also recommended that representatives of the Monumental and Building Trades and the Ceramic and Enameling industries should be placed on the committee. Mr. Brand of the Pullman Company suggested that the standard Safety Equipment C o ., of Chicago be represented. Chairman Creenburg then called for a general discussion of personnel and data. He stated that Dr. Thompson of the U. S. Public Health service would contribute the services of s t a t is t ic a l aid s and a lso see that Mr. Bloomfield and Dr- Greenburg would work together on th is research. There would be no need for any interference in the d istrib u tio n of the printed re ports of the National Safety Council and the U. S. Public Health Service. Mr. Cameron commented on a simple form which is to be used by the National Safety Council. Dr. Winslow said that a l l information should be con fid en tial, that a code should be used fo r plants and devices. Devices w ill need to be described, but con demnation when necessary would thus be brought out only on types of apparatus and not on individual kinds. Item "b" should be changed to read " A r t ific ia l abrasives". Another item should be added under "d" - "Building and monumental trad es". 3. Under item "2-b" there should be added " s ta tic suction in hood and recircu latio n of a ir " . Also "the minimum require ments at the le v e l of the worker's fa c e " . 4 . Under item "2-d" there should be added "A study of size d is trib u tion on representative samples". 5 . Under item "2 -e", with reference to analyses, add the "United States Geological Survey" and the "Laboratory of the Pullman Car Mfg. The item to remain as i t i s . 7 . Under items "2g" and "2-h", there was a question of medico le g a l relationship in reference to X-ray pictures of the chest. No d iff ic u lt y is a n ticip ated . It was emphasized under item "h" that i t would probably be d i f f i c u l t to find a low concentration of dust. Ur. Drinker moved, and Dr. Schubmehl seconded the motion, to accept the program It was agreed that the next meeting would he held in the f a l l , a t such time as considered necessary by the various members of the committee.
