Color is white; if tinting towards finish color is desired, use only water dispersed poster colors. 1955-SWEET-01202 9 ED LEAD PROTECTIVE PAINTS for STRUCTURAL METALS "Dutch Boy" red lead primer paints consti tute a complete and unique range of pro tective primer coatings for structural steel, most of which conform to the requirements of recognized specifications. If the number "29" were assigned to the painting section, for example, that number would be placed before each hyphenated number, viz. 29-07, 29-02, etc. 1955-SWEET-01208 Standard Painting Specifications -01 INSTRUCTIONS TO BIDDERS The general conditions and instruction to bidders as applied on the general contract shall apply to the painting contract with equal force. - 02 INSURANCE The painting contractor shall carry liabili ty insurance and workmen's compensation for all workmen on his payroll. The paint- ing contractor agrees to protect the general contractor from all liens or damages aris ing from or caused by his work. -03 SCOPE OF WORK The work to be done by the painting con tractor shall include the furnishing of all material, labor, tools and equipment re- quired to complete the painting and finish ing of building (s) as specified. - 04 GENERAL The painting contractor shall be completely responsible for the finish of his work and shall take all necessary steps, whether speci- fied herein or not, to obtain and protect the required finish until final acceptance by the architect. -05 MATERIALS All materials used under painting contract shall be as manufactured by National Lead Company, except where this specification calls for a non-"Dutch Boy" coating of Fed eral specification or its equivalent, or other approved coating. All materials shall be delivered on the job in the original sealed containers. All materials to be used as specified by the manufacturer's label on the package. All unspecified brands of materials, such as shellac, linseed oil, turpentine or thinners are to be pure and of the highest quality obtainable, and shall bear the manufacturer's label on each container or package. If the contractor desires to use materials of manufacturers other than specified, he must accompany his bid with a written re quest to substitute specific products of other manufacturers. This request to list each item specified, by manufacturer's name and brand; and the brand and manufacturer's name of each item to be substituted. This list to also state the price per gallon of each item and where a saving in cost is indicated the amount of saving to be deducted from the base bid. After award of the contract no substitution of materials will be permitted. All mixing required shall be done on premises, and materials shall be thoroughly stirred. No materials shall be reduced or changed in any way except as specified. 06 COLOR All colors shall be subject to the approval of the Owner, Architect or Engineer. Tint ing or matching of colors shall be done un der the supervision of the Architect. In all cases a sample shall be applied on the job and the Architect must give his approval of it before work is begun. If required, three panels of each color and finish shall be pre pared in advance, with the materials speci fied, for the approval of the Architect or Engineer. "Of color selected" shall be understood of all coats specified herein. Where the final coat is to be a color, the preceding coat or coats should be tintedtowards the finish color, using "Dutch Boy" Tinting Colors except where indicated to the contrary. Each coat shall have a slight variation of color to distinguish it from the preceding coat. 1955-SWEET-01209 14 Nat - 07 GENERAL If the painting contractor considers any surface not his responsibility unsuitable for proper finish of his work, he shall notify the Architect of this fact in writing and he shall not apply any material until the un suitable surfaces have been made satisfac tory, or the Architect has instructed him to proceed. All knots or sappy spots shall be given one coat of shellac before painting. All nec essary puttying of nail holes, cracks and blemishes shall be done after priming coat has become hard and dry and before second coat is applied. On old paint the surface shall be first brushed with a wire brush or sandpapered and where it is scaling badly, shall be scraped or burned off. All greasy or oily metal surfaces shall be cleaned with solvent before applying any materials. All scale or rust shall be removed by scraping or wire brushing. All work shall be done in a workmanlike manner by skilled mechanics. All materials shall be properly applied, leaving the fin ished surfaces free from drops, ridges, waves, laps and excessive brush marks. No paint, enamel or varnish shall be applied until preceding coat is thoroughly dry and hard. No exterior painting shall be done in rainy or damp whether, and until surface is thoroughly dry. No paint shall be applied when the temperature is below 50 F or when the temperature is over 90 F. No interior painting or finishing shall be permitted until building has been thor oughly dried out. Hardware, hardware ac cessories, plates, lighting fixtures and simi lar items shall be removed during painting operations and repositioned upon comple tion of each space, or shall be otherwise protected. In general and unless otherwise specified, exterior oil paints shall be allowed to dry at least 48 hours between coats and interior paints shall be allowed to dry at least 24 hours between coats. Enamels and varnishes shall be allowed to dry at least 48 hours between coats un less noted in the detail specifications and shall be sanded lightly between coats with No. 00 sandpaper and dusted before suc ceeding coat is applied. Paints shall be thoroughly stirred and kept at a uniform consistency during application and shall not be thinned in excess of the printed di rections of the manufacturer. After apply ing paste wood fillers, excess shall be care fully and neatly cleaned from surface by rubbing across grain. All nail holes shall be filled with putty or other approved filler, tinted to match finish. Floors, roofs and other adjacent work shall be properly protected by drop cloths or other coverings. ____ -08 CONCRETE, STUCCO AND MASONRY Concrete, stucco, and masonry surfaces to be painted shall be prepared by removing all dirt, dust, oil and grease stains, and efflorescence, and by roughening, when necessary, to provide good adhesion for the paint. The method of surface preparation shall be left to the discretion of the con tractor, provided the results are satisfac tory to the Architect or Engineer. Concrete or cement floors and other masonry sur faces to be painted with rubber base or oil base paints shall be free from excessive alkali and shall be thoroughly dry before paint is applied. Rubber base paint shall be applied with a short bristle brush. Surfaces ) to be painted with cement-water paint shall be thoroughly dampened with a fine spray of water before application of the paint. The paint shall not be applied on a frozen or frost-covered surface. The interval between coats shall be not less than 24 hours, and the first coat shall be slightly dampened before application of the second coat. The paint shall be applied with a stiff brush, and thoroughly worked into the surface to seal all pores, cracks, and voids. The paint shall be cured by wetting the surface between coats, and at intervals for a period of not less than 2 days after the application of the finish coat. Nails and similar exposed metal occurring in concrete, or masonry surfaces shall be coated with shellac or oil paint before the cement-water paint is applied. f ; I j j I; [ \ i j j l !; 1955-SWEET-01210 17 Standard Painting Specifications 09 METALWORK Shop-primed metalwork shall be kept clean and free from corrosion following installation. Abraded surfaces shall be retouched prior to finish painting, using the same type of paint as the priming coat, 10 PLASTERWORK Plasterwork shall be at least 2 months old and shall be thoroughly dry, clean, and free from grit, loose plaster, and surface irregu larities before paint is applied. Cracks and holes shall be repaired with patching plas ter, properly keyed to the existing plaster, and sand-papered smooth. All plaster sur faces shall be tested for the presence of al kali, which, if present, shall be neutralized with a solution of zinc sulphate mixed in the proportion of 2Vi to 3 pounds to a gal lon water. After drying, the precipitate shall be removed by dry brushing. 11 WOODWORK All milhvork and all other woodwork, where required, shall be sandpapered before ap plication of the primer. Small, dry, sea soned knots shall be thoroughly cleaned and scraped, and shall be given a thin coat of orange shellac varnish before the prim ing coat is applied. Previous to shellacking, large, open, unseasoned knots and all beads or streaks of pitch shall be heated by a 1. Priming: All millwork specified to be painted shall be primed on all sides before installation, with particular attention be 2. Puttying and Glazing: After the prim ing coat has been applied, nail holes, cracks, and other depressions shall be filled flush with putty, colored to match the finish coat, and sandpapered smooth. Putty shall be dry blowtorch and then scraped off, or if the pitch is still soft, it shall be removed with mineral spirits or denatured alcohol. Re sulting voids, if any, shall be filled with putty. This nationally famous product, with other S-W quality paints, for protection of exte rior wood and masonry, assures the architect of max imum durability and economy on all types of exte rior woodwork. SWP house paint should be specified for the exterior of all wood buildings. SWP Fume Resisting White 436 or Gas and Fume Resisting Paint should be specified where industrial fuznes are present. SWP Undercoater Ready-to-use SWP Undercoater 450 primes and seals badly weathered surfaces or unpainted wood and copper, and dries to a dull finish that bonds perfectly with the final paint coat. This material is extremely opaque, which insures good covering, and its special formulation gives it particularly strong adhesive qualities. SWP One-Coat White A special formulation of SWP for a one-coat job over previously painted surfaces in good condition. It comes in white only and should not be tinted or mixed with other paints. For best results, use only over light colors-- white, ivory, cream or light gray. SWP Tinting White Regular SWP White is not recommended as a base in making light tints. For this purpose SWP Tinting White 473 is supplied to be tinted with S-W First Quality Tint ing Colors* or to be blended with regular SWP colors (other than Solfast Red). Mildew Resistant Additive Sherwin-Williams Mildew Resistant Additive is for use in areas where mildew is prevalent and extra protection is needed against discoloration. When using SWP House Paint always add Mildew Resistant Additive to the un dercoat as well as succeeding coats. SWP Trim Colors possess mildew resisting qualities and, therefore, do not require Mildew Resistant Additive. Brushing a paint out to its maximum coverage per gallon is not always consistent with long time durability. True economy requires the maximum in protection over a long period and can only be obtained when paint is applied to an adequate thickness. SWP Fume Re sisting White 436 and S-W Gas & Fume Resisting Paints are formulated with special pigments and vehicles to give protection against discoloration from this cause. Brick and Stucco Paint A durable oil paint, formulated for exterior use on brick, stucco or concrete where a dull finish is desired. Differing from the purely decorative stucco finish, this paint, by pre venting moisture from penetrating brick and cement, lengthens the life of exterior walls and keeps buildings dry. A spar-type sealer is supplied to be added as directed on the label for sealing extra-porous surfaces. Shingle Stain S-W Shingle Stain is designed for use on wood shingles, either siding or roofs. Formulated from special oils, it adds to the life of the shingles as well as providing dec orative value. Masonry and Asbestos Siding Primer Designed for painting, at package consistency, such sur faces as asbestos siding, concrete block and masonry. (Not to be used on wood.) On rough textured surfaces (cement or cinder block) grouting is necessary before using this primer. A good full coat should be applied to satisfy the usually high porosity. Allow 2 to 4 days dry ing time before applying next coat. It seals the surface, resists alkali and produces an excellent undercoater, to be followed by SWP House Paint on exterior surfaces and S-W Alkyd Flat-Tone (odorless) or Semi-Lustre on inte rior walls. Types of Wood \ The common woods for exterior construction vary widely in their ability to retain paint. They may be classified into the following groups: Group No. 1. Holds paint longest and suffers least when the paint film enters a period of neglect. (a) Cedar (b) Cypress (c) Redwood. Group No. 2. Holds paint as well as first group but wood does not hold up as well when repainting is neglected. (d) Northern White Pine (e) Western White Pine (f) Sugar Pine. Group No. 3. Does not hold paint as well as first and second groups and wood is more affected by weather when repaint ing is neglected. (g) Hemlock (h) Ponderosa Pine (i) Spruce. Group No. 4. Woods in this group give least satisfactory service as a base for outside paint. No paint ing shall be done (a) immediately after a rain or during rainy weather, (b) over frost or dew or (c) when the tem perature is below 50 F. Knots and pitch streaks shall be scraped or burned, then coated with shellac before priming coat is applied. All nail holes or small openings shall be carefully filled with white lead putty after the priming coat has dried. previously painted surfaces Remove all loose and scaling paint by scraping or burning. Causes of peeling paint shall be determined and corrected by repairing all defective flashing, gutters, spouting, shrink age cracks, etc., where moisture can penetrate behind the surface. In case of general peeling, check insulation, air conditioning, vapor barrier, etc. Remove all defective sash putty, clean sash and prime with SWP Undercoater 450. When dry replace with linseed oil putty and let harden, covering it when applying the finish coat. 301---Wood Surfaces--New, Unpainted (For maximum durability on unpainted wood, 3 coats are required. However, while 2 coats provide less durability, satisfactory protection is provided for the shorter period.) Adequate ventilation should be provided underneath porch flooring to prevent rotting from moisture. All loose, scaling or blistered paint must be scraped or burned off. AH roughened wood and edges of broken paint shall be sandpapered smooth. 306-- Wood Porch Floors--New, Unpointed Priming--Porch flooring shall receive one priming coat of SWP Undercoater 450 on all sides and edges before laying. Apply first and final coat full body. Reduce inter mediate coat with Va pt. S-W Exolvent or turpentine per gal. On previously painted work follow Specification No. 302 using SWP Fume Resisting White 436 or S-W Gas & Fume Resisting Paint for both coats. Reduce First Coat with V2 . pt. S-W Exolvent or turpentine per gal. Apply last coat 4 full body. preparation--New Work Surfaces must be clean and free from dirt and loose or excess mortar. Do not paint after a rain--surface must be dry. preporation--O/d Work Scrape off all loose or scaling paint and wire brush thor oughly. Allow several days of warm dry weather for thor ough drying after a rain. Point up all bad mortar joints and fill cracks or broken spots with good cement mortar. Check for faulty flashings that might result in moisture entering the wall and affecting the finished work. 311--Brick, Cinder Block, Stucco & Concrete Walls & Asbestos Siding First Coat--S-W Masonry and Asbestos Siding Primer, applied generously at full body or reduced slightly with S-W Exol vent or turpentine. Kromik Metal Primer An effective primer for iron and. steel. It prevents rust through, the inhibitive action of its pigment--a carefully balanced combination of zinc chromate, red lead, zinc oxide and iron oxide. Although Kromik Metal Primer is formulated as a First Coat to be covered with finish coats of Metalastic or Kem A & A, the protection afforded without recoating is equivalent to the best top coats--a great advantage where steel must stand for long periods of time before the field coat is applied. Metalastic Paint This is a Linseed Oil - Graphite type paint to be used as a finishing coat for iron and steel structures such as buildings and bridges. All surfaces shall be sanded smooth, rubbing with the grain and never across it. Blemishes shall be corrected and the surface and the room cleaned of dust before proceeding with the application of finishing coats. 325--Wood Doors and Trim FvlJ Varnish Finish---Open Grain Wood Requirements for preparation of surfaces given above shall be considered a part of this specification. First Operation--Stain--S-W Oil Stain, selected color. Apply stain with soft brush, then wipe with soft, dean cloth to bring out highlights of the wood. Allow stain to dry 24 hours before filling. If no filler is used (closed grain wood) allow overnight drying before varnishing. Second Operation--Filler--S-W Paste Wood Filler (natu ral or tinted with S-W Oil Stain used in operation above) thinned with S-W Exolvent or turpentine to consistency of thick cream. Apply with brush and when well set rub off with clean cotton cloth or burlap, wiping across the grain. Let dry and sand. Third Operation--First Varnish Coat--S-W Mar-not. (Use S-W Rexpar Varnish if exterior.) Thin with 1 pt. S-W Exolvent or turpentine per gal. Sand lightly and dust clean. When dry, buff with steel wool, apply hard wax and polish. 331--Heavy Duty Wood Floors Sand smooth and clean thoroughly. Open grain woods should be filled with S-W Paste Wood Filler. Old floors should be .washed or sanded as required. Previous coats of varnish, wax or paint must be removed. First Coat--Apply S-W Floor Seal by brush or mop. Wipe surplus from the surface. Allow overnight to dry. (May be buffed if desired.) Second Coat--Same as First Coat. Where severe service requires periodic renewal, dress the surface with buffing machine, followed with one or two coats of Floor Seal as above. ' 332--Concrete Floors S-W Concrete Floor Primer is designed for new or unpainted cement or concrete floors as an undercoater for S-W Porch and Floor Enamel. The surface must be clean, dry, free from oil, grease, soap or wax. Etch floor by using a 1 lb. 6 oz. can of Bowlene or Sani-Flush to a gallon of water. Apply at the rate of one gallon of solution per each 100 square feet. Al low to stand 10 minutes and flush off with hose. Allow to thoroughly dry, about 48 hours, before painting. First Coat--Brush Concrete Floor Primer at package consist ency. Allow to dry, 1-2 days only. Second Coat--2nd or 3rd day brush at full body S-W Porch and Floor Enamel, of selected color. 333--Gymnasium Floors--Non-Skid Finish Sand smooth and clean thoroughly. Open grain woods should be filled with Paste Wood Filler. Old floors should be washed or sanded as required. Previous coats of varnish, wax or paint must be removed. First Coal--S-W Gym Floor Finish, brushed or mopped on. Allow overnight drying. Second Coal--Same as First Coat. Gym Floor Finish may be buffed with a power buffer, but best non-skid properties are obtained with a non-buffed finish. 334--Wood Doors and Trim-- Enamel Finish--New Work--Three Coats The wood must be of good quality and well finished for best results. [Requirements for preparation of surfaces (listed below) shall be considered a part of this specification. The selection of final coat enamel will depend on the type of work desired. For full gloss enamel, specify Hem-Namel Snow White or Enameloid, if in color. For dull finish, specify the enamel intermixed with equal parts Flat-Rite. Kem-Glo, a low gloss enamel of tile-like hardness and washability, may also be specified. (See specification No. 323, page 7, for details.) First Coat--S-W Flat-Rite reduced with 1 pt. of raw linseed oil per gal. If further reduction is desired, thin sparingly with S-W Exolvent or turpentine. Allow overnight drying. Color Harmony Semi-Gloss is a companion product--a durable enamel finish for factory machines, equipment, and dado and for trim in offices, schools, etc. It is tough, oil-resistant and extremely durable, and also very easy to apply. Both of these products have been tested by years of severe service in actual plants under a wide variety of conditions. New Work surface preparation--Brick, Concrete and Plaster must be thoroughly seasoned. Ventilation while drying is essential. Structural steel and other metal surfaces shall be scraped and wire-brushed to remove rust and loose scale and given a -priming coat of Kromik Metal Primer in addition to the painting schedules specified below. Wood doors and trim shall be sanded smooth, rubbing with the grain--never across it. The surface shall be wiped clean prior to painting. Packing House Semi-Gloss White A special type of white paint for use in cold storage areas. Dries by evaporation so that fumes that would contami nate food are entirely absent 72 hours after application. Quali-Kote, a professional painters' Latex Base paint, is for use on walls and ceilings, producing a soft velvet-smooth finish and is remarkably easy to apply. Quali-Kote is a finish of highest quality and washability. Cost of application is greatly reduced because Quali-Kote works so easily under the brush, needs no thinning and covers uniformly and completely in deep shades as well as in tints. Quali-Kote may be specified for residences, schools, hospi tals, hotels, where long wear and low maintenance costs are important considerations. Colors Sherwin-Williams Quali-Kote is available in beautiful, readyto-use colors, ranging from deep shades to soft pastels. Many additional colors can be made by simple intermixes. In addition to the regular White, the line includes a special Ceiling Flat White, designed to give the ideal flat or matte surface for ceilings. Characteristics One of the outstanding properties of Quali-Kote is its washability. After three or four weeks, it can be washed vigor ously and repeatedly without damage. The tight impervious film formed by Quali-Kote is actually dirt-resistant and the common substances that discolor paint wipe off easily. It is therefore an excellent maintenance finish for hotels, hospi tals, schools, offices, homes and public buildings. On bare metal, Quali-Kote requires a metal primer. It may be used over a conventional oil-type primer and sealer pro vided the primer and sealer is thoroughly dry. Quali-Kote may also be used over Quali-Kote Dry Wall Primer. Quali-Kote is easily applied by brush, roller-coater or spray gun. It dries in one hour. Tools may be cleaned and spat ters removed with hot, soapy water. Surface Preparation--New Work k New plaster must be thoroughly dry. In cold, damp weather, rooms should be heated and adequately ventilated while dry ing. Damaged places in plaster surfaces shall be repaired with Plastic Patch--deep holes with Patching Plaster. A first coat of Painter Craft Pigmented Wall Primer and Sealer, tinted to desired color, should be applied. Allow to dry thoroughly before applying finish coat of Quali-Kote. Surface Preparation--Old Work Surfaces shall be wire-brusbed to remove all loose and flak ing paint. Badly soiled walls shall be washed. Small cracks and broken places shall be repaired with Plastic Patch, deep holes with Patching Plaster. When dry, just before applying first coat, spot prime all repaired areas with Quali-Kote. Old paint haying a gloss or semi-gloss finish shall be dulled by sanding or' by washing with a solution of Tri-Sodium Phos phate or similar-type cleaner. Surfaces must be rinsed thor oughly after washing. Calcimine-type paints must be removed. Surface Preparation--Metal Surfaces Bare metal, both new and old work, shall be wire-brushed and primed with S-W Kromik Metal Primer before Quali- Kote is applied. 349--Walls and Ceilings--Two Coafs P/asfer and Masonry Surfaces First Coat--Painter Craft Pigmented Wall Primer and Sealer, tinted to desired color. Allow thorough drying. Second Coal--Quali-Kote, full body. 350---Interior Structural Steel--Three Coats First Coat--S-W Kromik Metal Primer, full body. Allow thorough drying. Second Coat--Quali-Kote, full body, allow overnight drying. Third Coat--Quali-Kote, full body. Note: Quali-Kote is supplied ready-to-use without reduction when applied by brush or roller. For spray application, reduce with water up to one pint per gallon of Quali-Kote. Do not use conventional solvent-type thinners such as turpen- 12 tine, mineral spirits, etc., nor oil tinting colors. Dry Wall Construction Dry Wall Construction is of interest to the architect as a new building.teehnique where low cost is a factor. Pig. ures indicate that it accounts for over half of all residen tial wall construction. Sherwin-Williams, after a long period of study and test ing, has developed a finishing system that gives dry wall construction the uniform appearance associated with con ventional plaster. The products offered have been thor oughly tested and used on hundreds of buildings under practical job conditions. S-W Joint Filler This is a ready-to-use joint cement. It has the special appli cation characteristics needed to enable the mechanic to trowel the taped joint and smooth the surface to conform perfectly with adjoining wallboard. S-W Joint Filler is non-alkaline and will not burn through subsequent paint coats. S-W Texture Finish This is a latex-base stippling material that comes in seven -colors and white (matching corresponding colors in QualiKote). It can be used to give a variety ot textures includ ing a roller stipple, brush slipyic, ui spvuge stipple. S-W Texture Finish requires no primer and one coat is nor mally sufficient. When extra washability and depth of color are desired, a finish coat of Quali-Kote may be applied. Quali-Kote Dry Wall Primer Plasterboard requires a special primer that will not raise the nap and yet seal the highly porous board. This is the partic ular function of Quali-Kote Dry Wall Primer. Although de signed primarily for dry wall work, it can be used as a primer on conventional plaster or masonry and may be finished with either Quali-Kote (latex) or oil-type paints. To secure a smooth, uniform surface in dry-wall construction, it is necessary that the wallboard be applied carefully. Dam aged or badly scarred wallboard should not be used. Nails should be sethelow the surface of the board. 351--Taping Dry Wall Joints a. Apply an even layer of S-W Joint Filler using 5-inch broad knife. Fill the joint completely, leaving additional material on either side to imbed the tape. b. Bed an approved perforated, paper tape (folded at cor ners) into the joint filler, centered on the joint full length. Rim the length of the joint with broad knife, forcing tape deep into the joint filler. Scrape off all excess, making sure none is left on the tape to harden. t. Spot all nail heads and other defects full and flush with broad knife and Joint Filler. d. Allow to dry overnight. Then apply a top coat of Joint Filler to nail heads and joints. The top coat shall be per fectly smooth and faired into the adjoining wall surface without ridges or trowel marks of any kind. e. When dry, the entire joint area and all nail heads shall be sanded with medium sandpaper wherever necessary to ob tain a perfectly smooth piece of work, ready for application of finishing material. 352--Texture Finish (Using S-W Texture Finish Ready-Mixed in Color) Joints shall be taped and nail heads filled as specified under 351 above. First Coat--S-W Texture Finish in selected color. Application by brush and roller or spray. Stipple immediately to desired finish with brush, roller, sponge, whisk broom or wood block. Second Coot --(Optional) Allow overnight drying and apply a finish coat of S-W Quali-Kote in selected color. Note: This system also applicable to conventional plastered walls and ceilings.
