Mr. Charles Freeman Area Director RE: Your CSHO No. M8099 - No. 123 Dear Mr. Freeman: , We have run some preliminary tests replacing the silica flour, in our spray mix, with another type of material. This new material is not a standard foundry product, but it is proving itself to be adaptable. It is almost silica free, having less than 1% silica. The preliminary tests have shown that by changing to the new material, it greatly inhances our chances to comply with the dust standard. At the prsent time, we are using this new material almost 100%, but we are still having some problems in perfecting the formula to the point where we are not having problems. We feel that these problems can be solved, but it will take time to work out the solutions. Respirable dust samples taken while this material is being used, show that it does significantly reduce the respirable silica in the air without adding to the total dust count. .additionally we are continuing to work on the green sand systems (Synthetic bonded silica sand), trying to bring all areas into compliance. We have tried additional collection without much success. At the present time, we are designing new enclosures for the employees, to reduce their exposure. U. S.
