Some tliire back, l-illon quantities of eight 8) high-volume Glldden products were obtained with the g\al of analyzingithem for number of trace heavy metals. This report summarizes the findings relative to Ur lead and cadmium contents of the 8 products.
A modified nitric acid - perchloric acid wet digestion method was used to achieve sample dissolution, followed by atomic absorp'Ion analysis for the two elements. The following results were obtained:

* This exceeds the amount that should be present, so the analysis was repeated,
with similar results being obtained. The pigments (plus Nuact paste) were
then removed by centrifugation and lead was determined on the clear vehicle.
A value of 0.12% lead was obtained on the vehicle, which calculates to 0,15%
of the paint solids. The balance (1.21%) w;s removed by the centrifuging
process "(ftuact paste?).

Analyses for the other trace heavy metals In these paints will proceed as time permits (to experimentally devise and evaluate the analytical techniques needed for each element.
