Purpose Thxs visit was made at the request of Mr. Byrl Stout, Vice President of Manufacturing, Pittsburgh Corning Corporation. The principal purpose of this initial -visit was 2> to become acquainted witn the personnel, operations and facil ities of the Tyler Plant and to consult with and advise plant management on occupational and medical problem areas. * 2* Scope * Mr*J. w. McMillan met Dr. urant at the Tyler Airport, and they returned to the plant and discussed the plant Medical and Safety Procram following which they observed the plant operation. Dr. Grant met Mr* C. Van Horn who Is the assistant plant manager and bandies the Safety Program and Mr* Meilurrav who is the day shift maintenance and production superintendent. At the close of the visit, the following comments and/or recommendations were discussed with Mr. McMillan. 3* Comments and/or Heoommendationa * Asbestos Dust exposure. Shortly after Pittsburgh Corning took over the plant operation from U.iARCO, the Industrial Hygiene foundation did an industrial hygiene surrey which found the dust control procedures adequate* Only the dust collector f cleaning operation, which is done once a day, produced significant dust exposure to asbestos. The employee exposed was adequately protected with a dust respirator* Mo change has taken place in the operation since the surrey* fiiployees are given annual chest X-rays, and no significant findings related to asbestos exposure hare been encountered. McMillan Initial hedical Staff Visit 2 Comment: It is desirable to reiurvey operations where potential asbestos dust exposures exist at least every two years to have evidence of the fact that control aassures remain adequate. Upon request, jjt. Urant will make arrangements for the resurrey. Chest X-rays taken of asbestos workers periodically should be Interpreted by a physician certified by the American Board of Roentgenology.
