INTERNATIONAL SMELTING AND REFINING COMPANY ZINC OXIDE DEPARTMENT EAST CHICAGO, INDIANA ANNUAL REPORT YEAR 1941 *** PNYC 00012528 / INTERNATIONAL BELTING AMD REFIHINTC COMPANY Kh ST CHICAGO, INDIANA SUMMARY OF ZINC OXIDE EEPAiffiiKNT OPERATIONS TBLVR 1941 OPERATIONS: Tbs French retort furnoos operated E4 retorts for 259 furaaoe days and 12 retorts operated for 52 furnaoe days. A total of 5645.8 tons of eleotrolytlo zinc was charged at an arerage working cost of $17.98 per ton, exclusive of major repairs, depreciation and packing costs. An average of 79.9 gallons of fuel oil per ton was burned. Our netal loss was .75$ for the year. This furnace also treated Canadian xino and the sine oxide was returned to Canada. The muffle furnaces operated a total of 524 furnace days on zinc oxide, with a charge of 6474.0 tons of material burning 69.4 gallons of fuel oil per ton. The average working oost of $17.59 per ton is exclusive of depreciation, major repairs and peeking costs. The furnace burned an average of 12.3 tons of charge per furnace day. Condensed netal was produced during the last half of ths year to exchange for scrap to maintain our fumaes operatlona following the controlling of scrap prloss in March. Ths Amerloan block unit operated without interruption throughout the year. 18 doors were operated until the middle of July, i*en a new 6-door unit was completed and Immediately put Into operation for the rest of the year. A total of 6380.0 tons of zinc-bearing materials were treated with a metal loss of 15.09$for the year. The average working oost was $24.48 per ton, exclusive of depreciation, and packing costs. This furnace was operated on Wisconsin and Tennessee carbonate ores, Tooele concentrates, and secondary by-products. In addition to roasted xino dross from Great Falls. LABOR: The common labor rate was 60d per hour at the start of the year but was Increased to 65^ per hour on April 1st and again Increased to 70^ per hour on Hey 1st, continued at this rate for the balance of the year. An average of 154 men were employed 38.4 hours per week for the year. The average monthly wage for all payroll employees was $144.56. An average of 47 salary employees were on the roll for the year, which includes foremen, Sales Department employees, and all office help working part time on Zinc Oxide records. A weeks vaoatlon was granted to 115 men and two weeks vacations were given to 5 men. The total cost of vacations was $4,376.11. Ho men were employed at the Akron Plant, as the plant was com pletely dismantled. PNYC 00012529 Sheet 2 - Suwmary of Zina Odds Department Operations - Tear 1941 AFFROFHIATIOHS: A total of $28,184.04 was spent on appropriations during the Tear. Three-fifths of this amount was spent on the ereotios of a 6-door American block unit and ona fifth on the replaoeaant of a tractor and trailer unit for Baking city delirerles. OPgBATIHQ COSTS! The working cost for the entire plant for the year 1941 was $26.49 per ton of material charged, ezcluslTa of depreciation and major repairs. A total of 54,113,715 pounds of nine oxide was shipped, excluding aetal and by-products fron our secondary operations 'that ware sold. ZIKC MATERIALS PPRCHASBDl The average cost of all nine materials purchased was 7.37<f per pound sine, ire purchased 4,610 tons of electrolytic zinc at an average coat of 7.663^ per pound zino, end 4,765 tona of seoondary zinc at an average of 7.019^ per pound zinc. The 3ast St. Louis prise western zinc price was 7-1/44 during 1941 until Ootober 10th, when it advanced to 8-1/4^ per pound.
