LETSINGER RE: INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE COMMITTEE The above committee members were contacted on April 23, 1957* No items were presented which would necessitate a meeting at this time. A report was received from the Chemical Laboratory which indicated the results of some tests that were conducted at the Caustic Etch Tank in the Remelter. The tests were conducted due to the complaints of irritation of the skin by a Scaleman. An unusual atmospheric condition caused a condensation of the rising caustic vapors. A later check showed no further irritation. Mr. T. B. Bonney made a noise survey with his sound testing equipment on April l8th at the slitter area of the Shear Department. We will receive a report on the results in a few days. There was one chlorine exposure case reported to the Medical Department during the past month. E. B. FASSEL & ^ L. T. LETSINGER - T (?u U M fj" *-iy ___ RE: INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE COMMITTEE MEETING A meeting of the Davenport Works' Industrial Hygiene Committee vas held on April 2, 1957, in the office of the Safety Director. Attending the meeting were the following: J. H. Lowry, G. L. Huey, G. Decker, R. H. Hansen, and B. L. Tiedemann. J. H. Lowry acted as Chairman at this meeting due to the absence of B. D. Kent who was attending another meeting. The problem of methyl alcohol fumes around duplicating equipment in the Planning Department had been reviewed at our February meeting, and the Engineering Department was requested at that time to check the hood and ventilating svstems on this equipment to see what could be done to improve thiB situation. A letter from J. K. Allen was directed to Engineering on February 20th indicating that this equipment would be utilized to a much greater extent in the near future and that this problem should be resolved as soon as practicable. The Committee feels that this problem will be greatly intensified by an increased work load on these machines, and we again recommend that this item be given immediate attention. Sometime ago a survey was made at Davenport Works to determine areas in which noise was of sufficient type or intensity to cause a problem. One of such nature was located at the scrap choppers on the slitters in the Shear Department. Mr. T. B. Bonney recommended at that time that we try to decrease the noise by means of insulation around the scrap choppers. This experiment has made no noticeable difference as far as human senses are concerned. However, Mr. T. B. Bonney will be in Davenport on April l8th and will make a check with his sound testing equipment; at that time this matter will be pursued further. ARD 044229 A letter was received from R. Emmet Kelly, M.D. of Monsanto Chemical Company in which he states that the fumes from hot pydraul are no worse, and quite TO MFS^kS. Pydraul is now being used quite extensively throughout the plant, mainly because of its fire resistant qualities. Literature was received regarding the use of vythene as a substitute for carbon tetrachloride when used as a solvent. After checking with responsible people, one gallon of this material was purchased. This material will be tested and evaluated. There were no chlorine exposure cases to report.
