Hyde Pittsburgh Corning F.&t) Center 6CC Presque Isle Drive Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15239 tear Jcr.n: I at writir.c to summarize tr.e prccress made uuriro our visit :e the Fort Aliecner.y piani March 26, 1969. The points sumnarized below were ciscussc-d at cur meeting with Messers Binder, Be reason, Dsiloway and Evan. 1. Initial Hcci Desicn I presented initial designs for builder and feeder hoods for the unibestes lines. There were son,e modifications made by personnel of the plant with regard to tr.e dimensions of the final builder hoed; Fete F.yan will confirm, the final dimension change. The concept of the hood was acceptable, as were two back-up hoods for the builder line. With resuact to the feeder hoods, my modifications of the latest desicn* by Ted Bergasor. were not thought to be satisfactory. The arrar.cement I had made wcuid prohibit the mar. from, properly . cuttmo the bac. Therefore, I will redesign this hood for sub mission to personnel at the plant curing our next trip up there. However, I m.ioht note that, in my opinion, the desicn will not creetlv alter the cfm requirements for the feeder hood. Additional Local Exhaust Sites We selected the additional local exhaust take off OOl'' in the unibestes line. I now have si: critica ocations where we will exr.aust air :rem tr.e process. Hyde 2 March 27, 1969 3 Decisions to be Made by Port Allegheny Personnel The decisions which must be made by the members of the Company at Port Allegheny are described below. These decisions are crucial before I can go any further in t:.c- design. The steps which I can take without these decisions are (2. above) design of the local exhaust ventilation for the pick up points. Ho\;ever, the following two decisions are crucial for locating mainlines and laying out the entire system. Also, the specs for the collectors are dependent on these decisions. A. Butler Scrao Buildinc What is to be done about the Butler Scrap heap? My sugges ti on is that this entire storage unit be scrapped and that a bin el c-vatec above the .-round La substituted. The* bin would receive 4. e material collected by the scrap cyclone, which apparently wo ks well. The dust collector for this exhaust line (12n bags) also wcr ks satisfactorily and will be retained. From the bottom of the c ycione tc the bin effluent would be a closed system. At the t- se of the bin a mechanical conveyer, either screw type, bar push * :vo c-,cr bucket type would move the material to the weicnine platform. of the scram feeder _nc. The resistance cn the part of personnel at Port Allegheny to this type cf system is real, but 1 believe we can overcome this resistance. I think we can do this by gathering information from vendors of solid materials handling equipment and showing the per sonnel at Pert Allegheny that this is net an unusual job. I be lieve the scrap will not be severely "altered in form, during trans fer and that the conveyor will r.ct cloc. If we were dealing with the amosite directly I would not recommend this type of system. I do net believe personnel at Port Allegheny will contact the vendors. They appear to have a very insular view of their operation ar.d try tc resolve all problems cr. their own without search!" cut ethers ir. the field for inf ermation. Therefore, I ask that ycu collect information relative to these bin-ccnvcvcr systems. E. Location of Lust Collector The location of the curt collects rs must be decided uccr. If the collector: ran be located soiree, r.u tc the wall that raiic 1 to-the truck, access road, this w'ill make for the most c.cnc vcn^ilo^-icn ?vrtfr , f this cannot be done cr.d collector: must be installed adjacent tc the present ccllector location, t.oer. it will r.Or.:> longer 1 incs. Scnccr.c must make this decision based on future plans for p lant expansion and savings to be accrued from optimum, design c-f t hr ventilation svs- Mr. John L. Hyde 3 n- .4 Use of Norblo Bao Collector March 27, 1969 Finally, I expressed the viewpoint that it would be pos sible to saVage the present dust collector (6" bags). A blower could be obtained from the Norblo Company which would be in the same series as the present one, but which would have a static pressure capacity of 12" of water. This is a stock item in the manufacturer's catalog. The pressure drop cf the system would be in the neighborhood cf the 12" H2O with a cyclone precleaner. I hope to use this collector ( 11,500 cfn) and a cyclone on the feed lines in order to recover the useful fiber. Sincerely yours MC:pfh Morcon Corn, Ph.D Consultant
