Scar Hr. Svanst ,
la reply to the telephone request of 25r VUlian Weiner, ve ore to -ccrpfint on the questions raised concerning the possibility of health hazard thought ty aceas persona to result frora exposure to the spraying of the odneral fiber 2 being applied for fireproofing at the Cleveland Federal Office Building*
--
There has been sane publicity recently vith respect to the possible
effects of
exposure to high concentrations of asbestos dust* Although the
studies have bees under vay for years, no final reports or findings have been
released. Apparently, the probability of a health hazard exists only in those
situations where thfsre is exposure to asbestos dust over.long periods, probably
sary years, and in places where there Is a high dost concentration and ventilation
is lacking. Ifcae of these studies are related specifically to spray vrinoral fiber
products, nor to our CAFCO EIAZS-SH32I2 Type B being used on this Job*
Our CAFCQ materials are specially treated during processing irith dust control agents* Bust concentration-is `fbrthor adnlaized by the Introduction of atcaized: sater sprays as the fiber leaves the hose* The livelihood of any eericas ccmcgntratloa of dust particles would be only .in the immediate vicini ty of the spray gun* For that reason we caution applicators to veer suitable dust masks, since they coy be working under these conditions over extended periods of tine*
We doubt seriously that any
hazard exists for other vorSoaen on tha
sane site vho are not actually spraying fiber* We hare no knowledge of any apuyer
or vorknan using CAFCQ saterial or of any person exposed to it ever baring been
afflicted with a respiratory ailment caused by cur fiber or process* Va ham been
informed by tha other members of the Sprayed Mineral Fiber Manufacturers Association,
Inc. that, similarly, they hare no knowledge of any case of respiratory illnsaa
being caused by the use of their spray mineral fiber products*
Of course, if a particular workman is unduly sensitive to dust, he should also vesr a suitable protective mask* Such allergic tendencies would be exhibited in the presence of most ary dust, such as fiber spraying, concrete harooring, plaster mixing, floor sweeping, and tha like.
* We believe'this answers the quootiens raised, and ve vill be pleased to furnish such other informstion as ooy be required.
Tours very truly, imiED QTATS5 MEERAL FRGDUCT5 CCMPAET
