FILE MEMO RE: WARREN FILE * KAM cc: JHT 5/18/88 I spoke today with Ruth Griffin (Tel. 594-5716) who worked in the testing lab at Monsanto from 1943 to 1982. She was involved in testing samples of vinyl chloride that were used at the Monsanto plant. She told me that until 1968 or 1969 Monsanto supplied most of its own vinyl chloride from its plant in Texas City. During that time Monsanto also participated in a pool including other suppliers of vinyl chloride which would enable the various companies to use each other's vinyl chloride as needed. Mrs Griffin was not able to supply me with the names of the pool members. However, from 1969 until approximately 1975, when Monsanto ceased its PVC operations, Monsanto did not supply any of its own vinyl chloride. It is her under standing, that the principal supplier of vinyl chloride during this period was American Cyanamid Corp. She will get me the name o&. the person who has personal knowledge of this fact. During the 1968-69 period, Monsanto was shopping around for a principal vinyl chloride supplier. During this period Mrs. Griffin tested vinyl chloride samples from various suppliers including Dow Chemical, Conco, and Goodrich. She states that Monsanto actually used the vinyl chloride from the suppliers that she tested. She also states that vinyl chloride supplied by Union Carbide and American Cyanamid was also tested during this period, although she was not involved in those tests. Mrs. Griffin has a lot of helpful information and was very cooperative.
