Schneck P-FMSI- 0Co3 f.jnuies of Annual Meeting -20- BRAKE LINING AND AIR POLLUTION June 19 and 2-, 196S Mr, Bette reported that there has been a great deal of controversy and diseussio on the causes of air pollution and that one of the industries blamed has been the asbestos brake lining industry as being the cause of silicosis. His company, which has been conducting tests along various lines, decided to check the veracity of this accusation and made some very interesting tests on brake linings. The lining was tested ona dynamometer in a box and everthing was measured and analyzed. It was found that brake lining is not a health hazard. Mr. J. R. Lynch of the U.S. Public Health Service, Department of Health, Ed ucation and Welfare had been interested in the tests being made and visited the laboratory to see the work that had been done* He asked permission to use seme of the results and then wrote a paper which will be released to the public in the near future in one of the journals on air pollution control* Of interest to the members is his conclusion: "Only a very small proportion of the asbestos worn from brake linings is re leased as free fiber; the remainder is converted into some other mineral as a result of the extreme temperatures generated at small spots on the lining surface. Thus - although urban air contains a few free fibers as a result of brake lining wear - they represent a very small proportion of the total asbestos used in the manufacture of brakes* Many sources of respirable fibers not associated with asbestos products have been identified (12) and the free fibers from brake lining wear appear to be an inconsequential health factor in air pollution*. The members were very much interested in securing copies of the entire article so Mr. Bette advised that he would try to secure a copy for each member. LOCATION OF NEXT ANNUAL MEETING The meeting was asked for suggestions as to where the 1969 sessions should be held but, after discussion, it was decided that they again be held at the Doral Country Club, ft was felt that proximity to the airport plus the recreational facilities and the excellent food and service were important factors in the selection of a site* On the question of the members1 wives being invited, the meeting was agreed that the meetings continue to be only for the members' representatives. There was no objection to the wives accompanying their husbands but since these were strictly business sessions, that the meetings, reception and dinner be attended only by the representatives. *********** No further business was brought to the attention of the meeting, therefore, upon motion made and seconded, it was RESOLVED: To adjourn Adjourned at 10:40 A.M. on June 20, 1968 H.
