Practices 1. Make use of mechanical exhaust ventilating equipment provided. Containers with pigments (put and take recepticles, sample tray, otc.) should be placed as close as possible to the exhaust source to obtain maximum control. 2. Discontinue practice of dry sweeping. Floors, production and packing equipment, exhaust system ductwork and adjacent surfaces must be vacuum cleaned. 3. Vacuum clean litharge bags prior to transfer of bags to dumping enclosure, lAS'iien or //th****.- rfvjt /S Cvte/</e of y * 4. Replace drum lid before removalG of drum from exhausted enclosure. 5. Use corrugated boxes for empty pigment bags, similar to empty litharge bag disposal technique. 6. Discontinue using mallet to compact pigment in drum to obtain a predetermined weight. This results in excessive dust liberation to the workroom. Less material will be packed in each drum. 7. Minimize dust generation by sensible handling techniques: (a) Connect canvas sleeve to blender carefully to eliminate shaking dust off of it. (b) Handle pigment from put and take receptacle carefully. Do not let pigment drop into receptacle. (c) Roll and jklace drums and install their covers carefully. (d) Handle pigment baqs carefully--do not throw them. (e) Report damaged ductwork or equipment out of adjustment to super vision where product leakage or dust gerneration occurs. (f) Remove drum labels carefully. Engineering and/or Production 1. Yellow drumming (a) Provide additional exhaust ventilation and dust collection for the drumming enclosure. Approximately 2500 cfm exhaust is needed to supplement existing exhaust. (b) The preferred alternate to item (a) above is to efcamge the yellow drumming operation to a system similar to orange drumming where the drum is filled and weighed directly under a "live bin* section of the storage hopper. -2- CYW1 3-000907 (c) Correct uneven condition of drum rollers inside enclosure. (d) Provide local exhaust ventilation for the composite sample drawer. (e) Replace gasketing at cleanout port in product chute between dust collector and drumming hopper to prevent product spillage. 2. Yellow bagging (a) Redesign local exhaust ventilation for the bag valve (while on the weigh scale), put and take receptacle, and composite sample tray. During the plant visit these changes were made for the green bag packing operations and substantial improvement in dust control was noted. Similar changes for the yellow are recommended. 3. Yellow Blender (a) Assure cover is fitted tightly prior to blender rotation. More frequent inspection of cover gasgets is recommended to minimise product leakage. , Litharge Charging (a) Building 85 and 86--Periodic sharpening of knife edge inside . enclosure is recommended to assure that the litharge begs are punctured when bag is placed on knife edge. (b) Building 85--Improve exhaust ventilation and dust control for litharge dumping and bag storage enclosures. (It was reported that the; existing system will be replaced shortly with equipment on hand.) Orange Bagging (a) Improve dust control at put and take and composite tray. ..Refer to Recommendation 2(a) above. Orange Blender (a) Provide an exhause hood as near as possible to .the canvas sleeve that connects the blender to the bag pecking conveyor. The use of a flexhaust duct connected to the hood during the sleeve con necting and disconnecting operation will control dust. General (a) Establish a frequent program of vacuum cleaning for the pigment departments to include floors, walls, equipment, ductwork and adjacent surfaces. (b) Initiate vacuum cleaning of work clothing prior to entrance to break and lunch room. A vacuum cleaning unit was discussed with Mr. w. Phillips that will do the job. -3- CYWI 3-000908
