JACKSON Assistant Prlncioal May 28/ 1993 To Whom It May Concern: Having met Mr. Jahi Bakari for the first time in February of this year, I was quite impressed with his commitment and dedication to serving the community that provided the foundation for his success. We immediately went to work selecting potential students from broken homes who were in danger of failing for this school year. Although the preference for students were for eighth graders, due to scheduling convenience, seventh graders were selected. Mr. Bakari set up tutoring activities from Monday through Thursday from in the room directly across from my office. I often had the opportunity to observe from a personal standpoint what was going on during the tutoring sessions. I witnessed confrontations, foolishness at times, but most of all, progress. It was never my expectation for the Harvesting New Generations program to turn underachieving students into Honor Society, but from the effort that Mr. Bakari undertook on a voluntary basis working with the participating at-risk students, the students have academically and behaviorally improved to the point that they all will be passing. According to teachers and parents, the students have something to look forward to every week and are more motivated to learn during class periods. This is not to imply that they all are angels; however, they are improving. Mr. Bakari and his student tutors were present every day they were scheduled to be here and I would recommend that a program such as this receive funding, as well as, space in Clark Junior High School for the upcoming school year. Harvesting New Generations provides activities on Saturdays that the students are interested in; however, they understand they must make good grades in order to participate. If other programs provided tutoring for the students who need it, then those students could achieve the standards that are set by those programs. Students nowadays, rarely have interests that coincide with academic achievement, therefore, I must commend The Bakari Institute for combining the academic component into its concept. If all programs were to adopt this format, then educators could be more focused on providing the academic skills that are necessary for the future leaders of our society to utilize toward making this a safer and better place.
