Todd, Chief Chemist for Skelly Oil at El Dorado, asked me a question this week which I hesitated to answer. In the first place, he has his plant set up with two sys tems of storage tanks. Into one system leaded gasolines are stored. Into the other system unleaded gasoline is stored. They are purchasing alkylate from NCRA at McPherson. This goes by pipeline to El Dorado, Kansas. Our company has run a trace lead on this alkylate and reports one-hundred parts per billion. Now, the question Mr. Todd wants to know, is do we consider the tank into which this alkylate flows a leaded gasoline tank and is it necessary to follow all precautions from a lead stand point if this tank were to be cleaned? If 100 parts per billion is not considered a leaded gaso line then what is the maximum parts per billion figure that we could use which would represent a leaded gasoline?
