His remarks covered structural integrity, degree o* combustion, surface burning characteristics, smoke potential and con trol, containment and experiments with plastics and smoke. His remarks were supported by a movie of the Sao Paulo, Brazil high-rise fire. The Committee expressed a desire to support the programs that Professor Williamson indicated, which are generally it*, agreement with the work areas being pursued by our Research Associate. ITEM 11-61-73 OBSOLETE PUBLICATIONS Mr. 6rackett reported that some Association publications were outdated and should be. revised or dropped. It was agreed, when possible to include the data in other popular current, pub 1ica tions. It was requested that the Promotional Committee, who has ultimate responsibility for the publications, allow the Technical Committee to review them for technical accuracy, as they are indi vidually considered for revision. ITEM 11-62-73 STANDARD FOR DAMAGE RESISTANT V.flLLS The sense of this ltern was considered under I tern 11-37 " Standards for Durability. COMMITTEE ACTION: A motion was made, seconded and carried to remove this item from the agenda. ITEM 11-63-73 ASBESTOS FIBER IN JOINT COMPOUND It had been recommended that the Association begin an in vestigative program to determine the extend of hazards to health and safety of use of asbestos in joint compounds, as a result of sanding and dry mixing operations. OSHA regulations are strict concerning asbestos and there could be problems within the gypsum industry as a result of inhalation of asbestos fibers present in dust environments. The committee proposed the following initial considerations; 1. The member companies should pool information they have on the subject. 2. It is necessary to determine ranges of hazards. 3. The staff is to develop a list of testing agencies qual ified to conduct tests of dust environments containing asbestos, determine estimated costs of test programs, and report on methods used. U. The Chairman is to include this subject in his report to the membership and request funds from the Board of D.rectors for a standard industry test program. J JiA. * t ft // . 13 5. Request that the Safety Committee recommend what is needed to protect the applicator working in these conditions. It was reported that contractor organizations had requested guidance from the Association on the problem. The possibility of drafting an ASTM standard on joint treatment compound was discussed but no recommendation was made. An opinion was expressed that asbestos may not be an ingredient in joint compound within the next three years. It was further speculated that contractor groups such as GDCI and iaWCC may wish to participate financially in the develop ment of an industry safety program for hazardous dust protection. ITEM II - NEW BUSINESS a) Product endorsement. The Technical Committee took a position against the endorsement of any product or tool by any manu facturer outside the Association in any Association literature. Questions relating to this subject rightfully belong to the Board of Directors and legal counsel. COMMITTEE ACTION: A motion was made, seconded and carried to remove this item from the agenda. b) Record Vaults. A request was attached to the agenda from Planning/Design Consultants for data regarding vault construction for record storage. Ul has such data and the committee recommended the inquiry be directed to UL for answer. c) Specification for application of finish materials outside of 55 to 70F. A question was brought that ANSI A97.1 should clearly state temperature application limitations for materials such as jo:nt treatment.
