Brown sobjoct Visit to King City Dear Mr. Lentz: Attached is a copy of the report of my visit to King City in respect to the examination program. I talked with Dr. L.H. Andrus today. He informs me that they have done some 30 examinations and have consulted with you in respect to_ accepting two of the applicants because of minor defects. I see" no objection to accepting these men. Dr. Andrus felt that our . examination forms were adequate. Dr. Andrus informed me that they had designated Dr. W. C. Goenne to act as a liaison between our local management and the clinic groups. ' It is hoped that some arrangements will be made to maintain the physical examination records and chest X-ray films in a separate confidential file so they will be readily available to the corporation when required. Plant King City, California July 9, 1963 Some time was spent with Mr, McPeek who had been Interviewing applicants for jobs in the new asbestos processing plant. They had over 25 applicants and were ready to start having them obtain pre-employment examinations. Although I had been in correspondence with Dr. L.H. Andrus of the Southern Monterey County Medical group, it was not possible to get an appointment with him until 4:00 p.m. Dr. Andrus was aware of our interest in having pre-employment examinations. Mr. Lentz drove me out to the plant site, 5 miles south of ' King City. There seemed to be considerable work to be. done on the plant, however it was at a stage of installation of equip ment which moves quite rapidly. Mr. Lentz explained the flow and handling of the asbestos ore through the process. This is slmiliar to the pilot plant operation observed at Sterling Forest. The bagger was installed but it was not possible to examine it in detail. Mr. P.W. McDaniel will review the equipment after he visits the plant when it is under operating conditions. We discussed the studies currently being carried out on air borne asbestos dust from the pilot plant operation at Sterling Forest, We find these fibers to be extremely fine, some 25 milli-mlcrons In diameter. Methods of collecting and counting UCC 000067 A 102 I 6 -2- these dusts have been evaluated so that at the time of plant operation we 3hall have an established method for collecting and counting this particular type of fiber dust. Mr. Lentz accompanied me on our visit to see Mr. Andrus. At King City they have a new modern hospital which was occupied in October 1962. The hospital is built with Hill-Burton Funds and therefore, is very modern and well equipped. We were shown through the hospital by the Supt. of Nurses. It Is gratifying to know that there is such a fine facility available. Adjacent to the hospital is a large out patient department. This Is staffed by the Southern Monterey County Medical group. ' They are under contract to provide out patient servicer for the hospital in addition to their own private practice. All lab oratory work and X-rays are done at the hospital. We met with Dr. Andrus. He is a qualified specialist in internal medicine and is especially interested In cardiology. It was explained that we felt that there was a definite advantage from our standpoint to have a single medical contact in a group such as theirs rather than trying to negotiate with a group. He felt this could be arranged after discussion with their group. It was explained that the mill will be processing asbestos. While we expected to control the exposure to such dust, never- UCC 000068 A 1 02 1 7 -3- the-less we would not wish to employ any one with evidence of pulmonary fibrosis or emphyyetna. Our primary objective was not to place anyone in employment who might aggravate a chest condition. For these reasons we wished to have chest X-rays as a part of the physical examination. We also wanted to have a urinalysis, haemoglobin and blood serology. Our examination forms had been sent to Dr. Andrus and he felt they were satisfactory. The cost of these examinations were to be around $25 each. In respect to the records of physical examinations and chest X-ray plates, it was not decided as to separate storage of the same. Dr. Andrus said ordinarily they would prefer to have them in the regular clinic files. He was asked to explore the possibility of keeping them in a separate file so they would be readily available to the company. Mr. Lentz said he had presently some records of transferred employees in his desk at the plant. Plans will have to be worked out in respect to the records. Dr. Andrus is very Interested in preventive medicine. In fact, he is presently participating in a study financed by the U.S.P.HfeS. in which they are conducting a long time study of family groups in King City to see if there is a relationship between familiar dietary habits and coronary heart disease. UCC 000069 A 10218 -4- It Is of interest that no other employers in the area have examination programs for their employees. They have been doing a few executive examinations. Dr. Andrus seemed particularly interested in an examination program such as we follow. A review of the qualifications of the physician of the medical group as published in the AMA Medical Directory indicates that they are all qualified in education and training. Dr. Andrus would like to have someone come to California and present a talk on Industrial Medicine to their group. This would be helpful in introducing Industrial Medicine to"the area. m.
