Wei, M.D./Princeton During the Medical Program Meeting in Houston on 3 March 1976, the physicians have addressed themselves to the question of the require ments for medical treatment in case of emergency or massive exposure to vinyl chloride. By definition, an emergency or massive exposure to vinyl chloride is Yhen a person is exposed to VCM concentrations exceeding 100 ppm. The physicians have agreed to the following medical treatment for those who had emergency or massive exposure: 1.) If the person, after exposure, displays any of the clinical symptoms of 'dizziness, disorientation, signs of intoxication, nausea, headache, -vomiting, and, incoordination--the person shall he admitted to a hospital for overnight observation. He shall be given an SMA-12 test at the time of admittance and a repeat test three (3) weeks after the exposure. 2.) If the person, after exposure to emergency or massive quantities of VCM, does not display any of the above clinical symptoms--he shall be given an SMA-12 test "immediately" and a repeat test three (3) weeks after the exposure. Tillson H L, Watson In order to have a data base for operation under the permanent OSHA standard, the 8-hour personal monitoring results for the prior six months at the two PYC plants were summarized by category. The results are attached. I find nothing terribly surprising about the results. The job categories expected to be higher than the rest were, such as cleaners and recovery men, although not as much as might have been predicted. Maintenance was lower than might have been expected. There still are more than desirable in the "greater than 5 ppm" group, a few of them quite high, and these occurred In all categories except "other" and "maintenance" at Escambia. This Is an area that needs attention. The Calvert results show somewhat higher overall exposures than at Escambia, having fewer in the "less than one," and more In the "1 to 5" ranges. This seems to be due to a higher sampling rate on two relatively low-exposure groups, supervisors and maintenance. The higher-exposed categories are not particularly different. These differences In sampling frequencies can be explained partially by the difference In job assignment methods at the two plants. I hope that this analysis will be useful to you in your exposure abatement program. A similar analysis will be prepared for the months April-September.
